10 Computer Hits

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

10 Computer Hits is the first in what would prove to be a lucrative series of compilations for Beau Jolly. Although published on all of the main 8-bit formats of the time, the content of the compilations varied from machine to machine by virtue of Beau Jolly's policy of picking up cheap licences from publishers who generally didn't have enough material (or funds) of their own to publish a compilation of their own. The compilation was also notable for being one of the first to be advertised on British televison. Games included were: * Chuckie Egg (A 'n' F) * Pinball Wizard (CP Software) * Killer Gorilla (Micropower) * Heroes of Karn (Interceptor) * Special Operations (Lothlorien) * Flight Path 737 (Anirog) * Ghouls (Micropower) * Defend or Die (Alligata) * The Covenant (PSS) * Jack and the Beanstalk (Thor) While most of these were older titles when the compilation was released, The Covenant was still viewed as fairly new (having been released only two months earlier).

101: The Airborne Invasion in Normandy

101: The Airborne Invasion in Normandy

Windows - Released - 1998

101: The Airborne Invasion of Normandy is a turn-based strategy game set during World War II were the player takes command over a troop of 18 units. Every mission starts with a detailed planning phase. There the player chooses his men and equips them. Because this can be a time-consuming task the game offers the option to make these decisions automatically. The last step before starting the mission is to set where the units sit in the plane. This is important because of one unique feature of this game: during the jumps there are randomly generated happenings which are applied to the units, e.g. they get separated, killed or the whole plane gets shot down. After all surviving units reach the ground the player respectively the AI moves one unit at a time. Every one has a certain amount of action points which decrease with every action, e.g. moving, resting, trading equipment or firing. The goal is always to liberate a certain area accompanied by a few optional tasks which have to be found during the mission. It is also important to note that the game uses fog of war and doesn't tell the player where his other units are. This means he has to orientate himself with a map - if one of the nearby soldiers has one in his equipment. After three days at most the mission ends and the player gets rated.

1552 Tenka Tairan

1552 Tenka Tairan

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - July 16, 1993

1552 Tenka Tairan is a war strategy game (with MOUSE support!) set during the Sengoku period of the Japanese history. The three campaign scenarios are set, respectively, in the years 1552, 1582, and 1600. The player is put in the midst of the so-called gekokujou situation, when ambitious daimyo (feudal lords) began to overthrow their superiors, resulting in a global war for dominance in Japan. The player controls such a warlord, choosing one of the available historical figures, or creating his/her own character. Character creation is Ultima-style; the player is asked a series of questions, and depending on the answer, the player-controlled general will have different statistics. The gameplay involves managing the army, advancing the troops, conquering neighboring provinces, defending own castle, etc. Though the game pauses when the player makes a decision, the time advances regardless of the player's actions, effectively making Tenka Tairan a real-time strategy game. Battles take place on separate screens, with a wealth of tactical possibilities for positioning and maneuvering the troops.

16

MS-DOS - Homebrew - 1996

A sliding puzzle game similar to classic picture puzzle games however instead of completing an image you slide numbered blocks 1 through 16 into order. The game starts with the numbers in a scrambled order, just like in the picture puzzle. There is always one empty square into which you can slide one of the surrounding 4 blocks. The object of the game is to slide all the blocks back into their original numerical order. The problem is that since you have only one empty square to work with when arranging the blocks you inevitably place the puzzle further out of order in your attempts to solve the puzzle.

Players from each faction cooperate to gain control of key towns and forts. Share the fun in this light and fast paced game vs the AI, hotseat or online! 1775: Rebellion is based on the award winning board game developed by Academy Games. The mapboard represents the original 13 Colonies plus Maine, Nova Scotia, and Quebec. Each Colony is further subdivided into areas over which factions will struggle for control. A faction holds control of a Colony when only units of its side are present in the areas of a Colony. Player controlled factions include the Continental Army, Patriot Militia, British Regulars and Loyalist Militia. In addition to this the Allied French and Allied Hessian factions, which are controlled by American and British forces respectively, can be brought into the game by event cards playable by each faction. Each game is played in a series of rounds. Victory conditions are checked for each side starting on round three and each game ends with victory points being tallied automatically on round eight if no one has won before then. Each round is subdivided into four turns, one for each side, which happen in order determined by a blind draw of the turn marker for each faction. It is entirely possible for a faction to go last in a previous round only to go first in the next.

1830: Railroads and Robber Barons

1830: Railroads and Robber Barons

MS-DOS - Released - 1995

Based on Avalon Hill's board game of the same name, 1830 is a railroad empire building game that is along the same lines (although a different style of gameplay) as the much more famous Railroad Tycoon. Capturing the very look and feel of the board game, all the way to the hexagonal playing field and track tokens, 1830 is a turn based game that emphasizes the successful running of a company and manipulating the stock market rather than managing a railroad. Tracks can be laid, cities connected, trains purchased, and schedules set, but the ultimate goal in the end is making money, even at the cost of your company; you'll wind up buying and selling a number of them during the course of the game anyway.

1869

1869

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1993

1869 is a strategy and economics trading game developed by the Austrian company Max Design GesMBH and published by Flare Software for Amiga OCS/ECS/AGA series of computers in 1993. You cannot beat the feeling of power money brings, and there is plenty of money to be made in the A1200 version of 1869. It is the late 19th Century and the world is wracked with civil wars and international conflicts. In many ways, there has never been a more exciting time to launch a business venture. You play the owner of a fledgling shipping company and you have to use your skills as a tactician and businessman to exploit the various trading situations around the world. If you succeed then your business expands, but if you fail, you could end up losing more than just your livelihood. The A1200 version of this game does not actually seem to be that much different from the original version – you get the same brief animation sequences and humorous interludes. You even listen to the same irritatingly nautical chip music. However, 1869 can be best appreciated in multi-player mode with you and up to three other pals battling it out for the ultimate control of the high seas. If you're heavily into 19th century nautical history, or play on an Amiga with other enlightened beings, and the idea of pretending to be a hard-nosed, back-stabbing, scrupulous capitalist appeals to you, then go buy this game. Just be prepared to play like a real Thatcherite.

MS-DOS - Released - 1992

Trade goods between ports all over the world in this economic simulation game. As a 19th century merchant newcomer, the player need to buy a ship, find a crew, load a few goods on the ship, and sail into the horizon, until the player reaches a port with a demand for said goods. Eventually will have the money to buy more ships, create regular trade routes, and become the head of a regular trading company. 1869 focuses on management and economy, rather than action. Actual sailing is done by plotting a route and then watching the days go by, interrupted only by the occasional random event. Basically you'll be planning routes, watching out for special assignments (that pay well if completed on time) and generally trying to steer clear of the shores of bankruptcy.

19: Neunzehn

Nintendo Famicom Disk System - Released - March 4, 1988

The heir to the throne is shared by four brave people: Darius, Simon, Thales, and Sonia. The 19 gods of Olympus left behind an omnipotent stone to the great emperor Achilles, who has ordered a search to be conducted for the stone. You take the role of one of these four in an effort to find the stone on the island before the rest, waging war with opponent armies to prevent them from finding it first. 19 is somewhat unique among turn based strategy games, in that turns are taken in real time, following rules that are reminiscent of the Japanese chess-like game known as Shogi. The game takes place on an overworld map, on which players take turns moving troops. When opposing troops vi for the same location, the game switches to a zoomed-in combat screen, showing each individual member of the opposing forces. While the story of the game revolves around finding a stone, there is no actual stone to discover. Your only goal is to wipe out the armies of the other three opponents.

20 Squares

Windows - Released - August 1, 1995

20 Squares is a shareware computer conversion of an Ancient Egyptian board game, probably dating back even before the pyramids. The prosaic name of the game, stemming for its 20 square board, is due to the fact that no name has survived on papyrus. The rules can also only be guessed, but the game is probably very similar to Senet, another Egyptian board game with 30 squares instead of twenty, and it seems to have come from a Sumerian board game . The game is a simple "race and bump" game. You race down the board with your five tokens, trying to get them home before your opponent does. You can bump your opponents back to the beginning, and the board also contains some special squares which give you an extra turn. As dice were unknown back then, the Egyptians (and the game) used "casting sticks" -- the halves of a twig cut in two, with one flat and one rounded side. Throwing four of these sticks together results in up to four flat sides up, which is the number of squares you can move. Zero flat sides up count as a six, giving you another turn, as when you throw four flat sides. 20 Squares game comes with a tutorial, explaining the (simple) rules in quite length, and features so-called "Mummy Facts" during the game -- interesting bits of information about Ancient Egypt. 20 Squares is a shareware computer conversion of an Ancient Egyptian board game, probably dating back even before the pyramids. A straight PC conversion of its card-based namesake, also known as Blackjack: each round begins with a bet, and the goal is achieving the highest hand without going over the value sum of 21. The computer (dealer) and the player both draw cards, and then decide their move - hit or stand, or (for the player) double, split or surrender; when the dealer has an upturned ace, the player gets the option for an insurance bet. 221 B Baker St.

221 B Baker St.

Commodore 64 - Released - 1986

Based on the board game of the same name, 221 B Baker St. pits up to four players against each other in a race to solve mysteries set in Victorian London. After picking a character (Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, Irene Adler, or Inspector Lestrade), players select one of the thirty available mysteries and read its case file in the game's manual. The case file presents the particulars of the case, mentions the people involved, and explains what the players need to deduce to win the game. Solving the mysteries entails moving around London (the game board) via a roll of the dice, entering locales to collect clues, and then piecing the clues together. Among the fifteen locations available are a pub, a park, and a bank, and each location is brought to life with voice synthesis. Each location will have a clue, but not all clues will be useful. Before solving the case, players must visit Scotland Yard for a badge. Players might also want to use a badge to lock a location with a useful clue, requiring other players to detour to the locksmith. Once a player believes they have solved the case, they must return to Baker Street and answer a quiz. If the player is incorrect, the other players can continue.

2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - November 29, 2012

Developed by the same team behind Super Robot Wars Original Generation Gaiden, the game uses high-energy, dynamic action for the in-game battle sequences. According to current series producer Takenobu Terada, the game will use High-definition 2D sprites rendered over a 3D background. This effect was similarly used in the previous Super Robot Wars 64. The Twin Battle System from previous Original Generation installments, where two adjacent units can combine into a single squad, which can then attack simultaneously, will return. Two new features of the game were also revealed. The first one is the Maximum Break, which allows 4 units to attack simultaneously to the enemy.[1] The second is the ability slot system, which each pilot and mech gets three ability slots. Twin Units, one in game piece with two robots and two pilots, have a total of twelve slots. Default abilities were equipped when the game starts and defeating enemies allows players to obtain new ones. To activate an effect, the player needs three of the same abilities equipped to either the pilot or mech.[2] Usual features like the Weapon Equip System and Combination Attacks are also present

3~D Voice Chess

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

3-D Voice Chess is a version of the strategic board game that sees two players battle to take control of the other player's king. The chess pieces are divided into two different colored sets: white and black. The players of the sets are referred to as White and Black, respectively. Each set consists of sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. Each type of piece can move differently and understanding the differences are key to overcoming your opponent. 3-D Voice Chess sees a single player take on a computerised opponent and gives you the choice of playing as white or black. The computer has seven skill levels which will impact on the response times. Skill levels range from "Beginner" to "Correspondance" with an average response time of 8 seconds stretching to 24 hours at the maximum skill level. Not surprisingly, there's also a save function so you can keep your games ongoing As the name suggests, you also have the option of having speech output so if you have a compatible peripheral attached (or emulated!) the computer will read back the moves as they are made.

3001: O'Connors Fight

Commodore Amiga - Released - 1990

In 3001: O'Connors Fight, the player takes the role of John O'Connor, one of six space lords which fight for dominance over the space empire. The main playing menu consists of two parts: the space map with all planets (either in animated 3D or a top-down view) and the menu with up to four commands. The basic gist is that the lords need to visit owned planets in order to adjust their production focus: space ships are used to defend planets and fuel is required to move them around the empire. More planets are acquired by attacking them. The result is calculated automatically and is based on the amount of defending respectively attacking troops. A special case comes into effect when a space lord is currently on the attacked planet: the winner of the fight instantly receives all the loser's planets. A lord is permanently removed from the game after the second personal defeat; the goal is to unite all planets under O'Connor's rule. Sometimes there is an action sequence in which the player has to move the space ship (by clicking on cursor keys) in order to avoid obstacles.

3D Chess

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1983

This is a modified version of the old Psion Chess program - I got bored with the "newspaper" style 2D representation, and wrote a snazzy (well, I thought so) 3D perspective graphics routine and bolted it onto the Psion program, removing the old display routine in the process. It still plays exactly the same game of chess as the original, however. About two weeks after I'd finished this, The Edge release "Psi-Chess", which was faster and smarter than Psion chess, and had a snazzy 3D interface. Bastards....... Bill Bennett

3D Maze

Windows 3.X - Released - August 21, 1991

3D Maze is a simple graphical maze game. You begin in a blue square. The object of the game is to reach the red square hidden somewhere in the maze, then go back to the blue square. Once you do that, you win the game! You only have the help of an Elf which tells you if you're close to the red square or not. If you're getting close, it'll say "Warmer"; if not, it'll say "Colder". The game also offers four maze sizes: Playable (12x12), Taxing (20x20), Unhealthy (30x30) and Suicidal (50x50). This is a more modern take on those old 8-bit maze games that were on computers like the ZX Spectrum, C64, and Apple II during the early to mid 1980s.

Acorn Atom - Released - 1980

3-D Noughts and Crosses is an adaptation of the board game Qubic which is commonly known as 3D Tic-Tac-Toe. The game plays like the original pencil game Tic-Tac-Toe but adds an extra dimension. Despite the title this version does not render the graphics in 3D, but has the four boards placed side by side. The concept is still the same, though, with the player needing to get four in a row either on a single board, vertically in a column or diagonally through the boards. It is played against an AI opponent whose level can be selected from one to five. The game is entirely played by entering coordinates with the keyboard.
