Berzerk Debugged

GCE Vectrex - ROM Hack

Berzerk Debugged is a version of the original Berzerk which no longer has crashes and has a few other bugs fixed. In the original version, there is a bug which causes the player to not receive a bonus for destroying all enemies on a level with ten robots. The crash exists at higher point ranges (5,000/7,000 points and above). At these point ranges, a high number of robots return fire simultaneously and overload the memory needed to keep track of all the projectiles. In addition, robots can no longer shoot through walls. Homebrewer Mark Shaker released Berzerk Debugged as part of Vectrexcarts.com. At the time, he had acquired two different fixed version of Berzerk which contained several bug fixes. One was a GCE prototype dubbed Berzerk II and the other was a debug by Fred Taft from a disassembled ROM. Both fixed the crash and had a number of other optimizations. Berzerk II is included on the Sean Kelly Multicart 2.0 while the Fred Taft Berzerk Debugged may be the version released by Mark Shaker and later John Donzila.

Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 1999

Birds of Prey is a Vectrex game similar to the Galaxian series, some might call it a homebrew port of Phoenix. The gameplay is similar to Galaga and consists of five waves that simply loop with increasing difficulty. Instead of using the analog stick you press buttons 1-2 to move left and right, while button 4 fires. It takes a few minutes to adjust but once you do you'll find the control scheme works fine. By pressing button 3 you can activate a shield once per wave (or re-use it if you lose a life) and this protects you from incoming fire and enemies. It's very handy and you'll want to use it when you're surrounded. The first wave sees you trying to blast down small birds but you can only fire one bullet at a time. The birds can spray multiple bullets at once and they often swoop in on you. The difficulty is high so don't expect to be eased in! The second wave is more of the same but this time you can fire two shots simultaneously which makes things more manageable. The third and fourth waves are the weakest as they feature large, flapping birds that take forever to shoot as their hit box is small (you need to hit them dead-centre). While they occasionally fly towards your ship they tend to only move from side-to-side making these waves easier than the preceding ones. The last wave is interesting as it features a boss battle, seldom seen on the system. You face a giant mother ship with a gaping hole in the centre; you instinctively know where to shoot but it's protected by swarms of birds that try to attack you. If you manage to beat the boss it explodes in a satisfying manner! As this is a high score game it's tempting to continually fire your weapon at will. However, I found it's better to be strategic and follow attack patterns as enemies will frequently line themselves up for a perfect shot.

Frontier: Dead or Alive

Frontier: Dead or Alive

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2019

Frontier: Dead or Alive is a game that draws inspiration from the 1979 Nintendo arcade title Sheriff. There are three options on the main menu: Sherrif V Bandidos (single-player game), Outlaw Hill (two-player game) and Townsfolk Gallery (overview of all the saved people). In Sherrif V Bandidos the player's character is a sheriff in the middle of the screen that can be freely moved around in any direction using the joystick. He is surrounded by outlaws that move around him clockwise. They sometimes shoot and move inwards. The sheriff can fire in the direction he is facing and needs to take out the bandidos. However he also needs to protect an innocent townperson who follows his around and needs to stay alive. There are twelve stages in total, each with a different character to save and an increasing difficulty level for instance introducing exploding TNT. Sticks of dynamite can be picked up quickly before they explode to disable them. After shooting a bandido a bird appears near the top of the screen. After completing a level a bonus can be played as a quick-draw shoot-out shown from a behind view with only a single bullet. Quick reflexes are needed to shoot first.

Hexed!

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2013

Hexed! is a card-based game by FURY and proceeds Vector 21 and Royal 21. Similar to most of George Pelonis's releases, it had a limited production run. Due to slow sales, the production was set at 50 with extremely short notice. With such a small number produced, it has caused high collectability. Hexed! is turn-based. Card info will be displayed when the player hovers their pointer over any of the three displayed cards. While hovering, the player can grab the card and drop it anywhere in the play area. Some cards can be combined by dropping the active card directly on top of a compatible card to make a new more powerful card to play on a subsequent turn. Cards that have the ability to be combined are labeled as combo cards on-screen, however only certain cards can be combined. The dealer cannot combine card and must play the next card in the deck of Voo-Doom. Life is indicated as an orb. Certain cards will increase the players life orb while others will diminish the dealer's life orb when played. The goal is to deplete the dealer's life orb of all power and win the game before the dealer drains all the player's life orb. In addition to cards which affect life, there are also cards which cause the player to both be infected or possessed and will gradually drain life until either a cure card is used or all life is drained.

I, Cyborg

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2004

I, Cyborg is a shooter set in a partial 3-D environment viewed in a behind the player perspective. Somewhat presented in the same manner as the unreleased Dark Tower, the player moves a big cyborg throughout several levels, seeking revenge after being wrongfully imprisoned and either avoiding or destroying everything in its way. As the player moves throughout an Area, at various times a trap will be triggered, releasing an enemy (or a set of them) from the top or side areas of the screen, which will then attack the cyborg. Enemies either come out in a set number, while others will keep on reappearing indefinitely until the player moves forward a certain amount until the trap deactivates itself. Enemies can also shoot or ram into the cyborg, causing damage, which is denoted by a number on the cyborg's back. The cyborg starts each area or phase with 10 health units, which a collision with an enemy or its weapon will drop the cyborg's health down by one, except for an encounter with Decapitators, which will instantly end the game upon contact. Meanwhile the cyborg can counterattack with an acid mist weapon that can be aimed in three directions.

Invaders Down

GCE Vectrex - Released - July 23, 1983

Shoot the invaders. After 10 seconds, the mine explodes

Mail Plane

Mail Plane

GCE Vectrex - Unreleased - 1983

Mail Plane is an unreleased flight simulator that uses both a standard controller and the Vectrex Lightpen. The objective is to load five packages into your plane and deliver each one to a specific city before you run out of fuel. To increase the challenge, clouds must be avoided, otherwise you risk being hit by lightning and losing one of your five lives. What's most impressive is how the game is split into multiple sections to immerse the player. Prior to takeoff, you have full control over the flight path, allowing you to map the most efficient route; this is great for replayability and adds layers of strategy. Careful planning is crucial, and I found it helpful to take a picture of the drop-off points beforehand for navigational purposes! Next up is the mail loading sequence where you drag packages into the plane; the Lightpen lacks true precision, but for the purposes of what's required here it works fine. You then accelerate and takeoff using the controller, and enter the heart of the action; here, the game adopts a top-down view as you dodge clouds and search for the correct cities. It's slow-paced and relaxing like Pilotwings (1991, SNES) and controls beautifully. The threat of lightning is an integral part of the challenge, as without it, flying around and delivering packages would be easy! Its inclusion cleverly forces you to watch your fuel meter (as dodging clouds takes away precious fuel) while trying to be economical at all times. My only annoyance is that the flight path screen isn't always accurate, and it can fool you into thinking a city is located towards the right when it's actually diagonally-right. Once you've navigated to the correct location you simply press Up on the controller to land, use the Lightpen to unload, and repeat the process until each package has been delivered. As a whole, the gameplay is tons of fun and I love that the map and cities change each time you complete a route.

Mine Storm

GCE Vectrex - Released - 1982

The game begins with a large enemy ship dropping mines onto the field as an ominous jingle plays, and moves from the top to the bottom of the screen, where it disappears. The player's ship starts in the middle of the field with 5 lives. Numerous mines then start popping up. The player must destroy all of the mines in order to progress to the next minefield. All of the mines can be destroyed with one shot, or hit with the player's ship, costing the player a life. There are 4 types of mines. This game came programmed onto the Vectrex.

Mine Storm II

GCE Vectrex - Released - 1983

Mine Storm is the built-in game that came with every Vectrex unit. It was also released in a 3-D version that required the use of the Vectrex 3D Imager and Mine Storm 2 is a debugged version of Mine Storm. One of the built-in versions of Mine Storm had a glitch that made the game crash at level 13, so GCE decided to send a copy of Mine Storm 2 to gamers that wrote to the company and complained. This game is rare, because most of the gamers didn't know about the offer, and also because not many gamers got to level 13.

Moon Lander

Moon Lander

Moon Lander is a clone of Lunar Lander for the Vectrex. It was developed by RAT and released in 1997.

Mr. Boston: Clean Sweep

Mr. Boston: Clean Sweep

GCE Vectrex - Released - 1983

This is the exact same game as Clean Sweep, although this version was a promotional release for the liquor company of the same name (which an ad for it appears before the game starts), Clean Sweep had a much wider release, and the player controlled a vacuum in that version. There are very few copies of this game that are known to exist.

A golf game or perhaps a mini-golf game for the Vectrex.

Patriots

Patriots

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - April 21, 1996

Patriots is a clone of a popular arcade game from the 80's. Patriots is faster and more challenging than other missile games. It is visually exciting, with many special effects, including fades, scaling and rotation. Game control is solid with additional options for those who need them. Patriots code is optimized to make the game run very, very smooth. Vectrex "flicker" is almost nonexistent, except for higher levels with tons of missiles, patriots and explosions all happening at once." Supports trackball input.

Patriots III

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2002

Patriots III: Ballistics Busters is a completely rewritten version of the original game with three cannons and unlimited ammo. In this version, the player's cannons will require time to reload but never run out of missiles like in the previous versions. In addition, this version also has an option to control the player sites or cross hairs through analog controls, rather that with only digital controls. These controls more closely resemble the controls used in the arcade version which were that of a trackball.

Patriots Remix

Patriots Remix

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 1999

PATRIOTS THE SPECIAL EDITION–I’ve only played the original Patriots in emulation a few times, and this seems like it has only minor changes (the bonus hidden game is even the same as on the original Patriots as well), just a slightly different pace and better sound. Here you must protect several cities from missiles raining down on them; maybe the missiles are in regards to the invaders wising up from V. Vaders TDC and realizing they should stop wasting manpower on you, and use machines and missiles instead to wreck havoc? Aircraft and smart missiles also add to this fun “remix” clone of Missile Command. Released as part of the Vecmania game pak.

Pitcher's Duel

Pitcher's Duel

GCE Vectrex - Unreleased - 2007

Pitcher's Duel was an unreleased Vectrex baseball game. A prototype of Pitcher's Duel was found though a private sale and was held until a high quality release could be done. Pitcher's Duel was eventually released at Classic Gaming Expo in both a retro-styled reproduction Vectrex box and also as a loose cartridge. While not a perfect reproduction of the game of baseball, this title is fairly accurate. Standard rules for baseball apply, however fielding, throwing and base runners are all controlled by the computer. At the start of the game Player 1 always pitches first. If a two player game is selected, then Player 2 will be at bat.

Protector

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2003

The Vectrex community was taken by surprise in 2003 when the announcement of the upcoming, original release of Protector LE was revealed, as Alex Herbert envisioned that the arcade classic of Defender could be brought to the Vectrex. A downloadable video was posted as well, showing that the intense gameplay from the original did indeed seem to be possible after all. It quickly sold out of its 100 copies in less than three weeks of release. It also came with the Spike Goes Down game included with it as well as an unlockable bonus. Then later on that year, the unlimited edition of Protector was released, although with a different game included, being Y*A*S*I, which stands for "Yet Another Space Invaders", as that game was a clone of that arcade classic (hence the title of this release being Protector/Y*A*S*I this time around). Again this was a bit of a surprise within the Vectrex community, as a lot of gamers in general didn't know that the Vectrex is capable of producing raster graphics as well, which Y*A*S*I proved by looking almost exactly like it's arcade cousin, having bitmapped, rather than vector graphics.

Repulse

Repulse

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 1999

REPULSE–clone of the rare Eliminator vector game. I don’t know how it compares, since I never played the original (saw it, but never played it), but it’s addicting and can take a while, due to starting with five ships and then earning a new one with every successful elimination (sorry!) of the mother ship. Unfortunately firing a shot up the mother ship’s slim shaft is difficult, especially with sentry ships thrown in the mix, which a hit from them can send you careening across the screen. A fun, differently-paced challenge than the other games on here, but you need some pretty decent nerves to make it through this one though. Released as part of the VecMania game pak.

Revector

Revector

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2004

Your goal is to out score your opponent in a 7 minute timed match. You can score points by shooting your opponent or by picking up power-up items. Power-up items (available in game one) appear randomly on the playfield to be picked up by players, having various effects and lasting either a certain time or with a set amount of uses. If neither player picks up an item after several seconds they will disappear. Once a game’s seven minutes have run out, the game will end once one or both players have destroyed the others’ vehicle (or they destroy each other at the same time). Revector allows you to take-on another player head-to-head, or a challenging CPU opponent. The game features a rather unique vehicle control system with the joystick controling both rotation and thrust.

Rockaroids Remix: 3rd Rock: In this third version of the game, Rockaroids is back, with with enhanced rocks and rotation, more speed and a faster, challenging game! Released as part of the Vecmania game pak. The title screen still shows the original 1996 release date, but the 3rd rock version was released in 1999.

Royal 21

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - August 8, 2009

Royal 21 is a follow-up to FURY's Vector 21, the first ever card game for the Vectrex. From its predecesor, a Tetris element was added, where dealt cards advance towards the playfield area and the player has to move them to the appropriate stacks (note: unlike with Tetris though, the cards move from the bottom to the top of the screen, rather than top to bottom). The object is to get as many cards as possible in a stack to equal 21 or to have five cards in a stack equal less than 21, which will then remove the stack from the game. A stack can only have five cards maximum; if a fifth card is placed in a stack and the stack amount is over 21, then that stack is a bust. There are four stacks from left to right on the screen, although they are not numbered. (The first stack is at the left side of the screen, the one next to it on the right is the second stack, etc.)

Scramble

Scramble

To fight back, your plane is equipped with both bombs and guns which can destroy most of the enemies you'll encounter. Your plane has a limited amount of fuel, and you'll crash if you run out. To replenish the fuel supply, you must bomb the fuel depots which will appear on the ground occasionally.

She is being held in a cage at the top of the screen; you need to find the key to the cage, and climb your way to the top. The screen consists of a moving catwalk which has several floors and gaps in it you need to jump over. There is also a ladder which can be moved around allowing you to climb between the different floors of the catwalk. As the levels progress, several enemies also appear which will be attempting to stop spike from reaching the top of the screen. To help out, Molly will occasionally drop a bow tie; if you collect this, all of the enemies on screen will temporarily freeze. When you have collected the key and reach the cage at the top, the level is complete and you move on to the next round.

Thrust

Thrust

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2004

Thrust is an unofficial homebrewed clone of the classic 8-bit microcomputer game of the same name. Thrust brings realistic physics and inertia-based movement into arcade games, directly influencing titles like Oids, as well as Exile from Audiogenic by the same author. The action is viewed from the side, with the graphics drawn in vectors, in keeping with the mathematical nature of everything that unfolds. As a Resistance fighter, the player must fly into enemy lines in order to steal Klystron Pods to power more advanced starships, using your tractor beam to take them. A network of mounted guns are aiming to shoot the player down – these can be disabled by shooting their power source, but eventually this will explode, forcing the player to flee. Some of the later levels feature reverse gravity, which increases the difficulty of the gameplay. The Vectrex conversion was made by Ville Krumlinde and published by Packrat Video Games in 2004.

Tour De France

Tour De France

GCE Vectrex - Unreleased

There's two different track layouts (Game 1 and Game 2 options) and the objective is to place first while obtaining the quickest possible time. Pressing Left or Right on the analog stick moves your rider across the road, while Up is used for acceleration. The face buttons allow you to change gears (Slow, Medium or Fast), pause the game (a rarity on the Vectrex!), as well as grab the occasional water bottle from the side of the road (required to maintain energy levels so you don't slow down). The gameplay involves avoiding the sides of the track, while dodging debris and fellow riders; failing to do any of these results in your rider crashing and losing precious seconds. What's impressive is that the tracks aren't flat, and instead feature rolling hills that even seem to affect how fast your bike can move while ascending. The action is fast but the biggest problem is that it's completely unplayable once you move into the highest gear; here, the action becomes a flickering mess and it's almost impossible to avoid the obstacles and opponents with any sense of precision. The trick is to cycle constantly between second and third gear, but even then you'll never be able to build up enough speed to place in the top two riders. There's also a very thin line between successfully grabbing the water bottle and crashing into the side of the road; as a result you'll never feel in full control, and instead find yourself bracing every time you try to obtain it. Annoyingly, following on from a crash opponents frequently run you over once you begin cycling which stops you in your tracks and sees more seconds tick off the clock. The Game 2 option features a slightly different layout and more debris on the road; while it's nothing too interesting it's nice that the developers added a bit more content.

Vaboom! / Vectrace

Vaboom! / Vectrace

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2000

Also known as Ronen's Game Cart, Vaboom!/Vectrace is a bit of an unusual entry, as there aren't a lot of racing games for the system as it is, as far as Vectrace goes. And it might also seem to be a bit unusual for another Kaboom! clone to be made for the Vectrex as well. So this odd pairing of games actually makes this cartridge stand out a bit.

Vector 21

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2006

Vector 21 is one of the very few card games for the Vectrex, being a cross between Blackjack and Solitaire. It is the player's goal to try to score a point value of 21 or less in a card stack as many times as possible without busting (going over 21) before running out of time. There are also several bonuses rather than just having a stack add up to 21 (which is a Blackjack) as well. Points are also awarded for a Five Card Fury (when five cards are placed in a stack that equals less than 21), as well as there being a time bonus awarded if the player is able to go through the entire deck of cards before time runs out with a minute or more remaining on the clock.

Vector Patrol

Vector Patrol

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - October 15, 2018

Vector Patrol is a faithful clone of Irem's Moon Patrol, recreated entirely in vector graphics. Just like in the original you have to navigate a moon buggy from one station on the Moon to another, all while avoiding crashing or getting destroyed by alien ships. The vehicle is constantly moving right and the player can speed up or slow down, jump, and shoot (simultaneously firing upwards and forwards). The game contains 25 checkpoints labeled from A - Z, also serving as a respawn point. Every five checkpoints mark a separate "stage" within the entire course; reaching the end of a stage under the par time grants a large score bonus. Dangers on the Moon include rocks (small and big ones) which can be shot to pieces or jumped over, pits which must be jumped, and UFO's which fire at the player or bombard the ground (creating pits). Later the player also comes upon stationary tanks which fire missiles (that can be destroyed with the player's own shots), landmines, and rocket cars which stalk the buggy from behind before rushing forward in an attempt to ram it down. After completing the first course (the "Beginner Course") the player can try his skill on the harder "Champion Course". In contrast to the original game Vector Patrol added a few bonus features like 3D animations after finishing a stage below par or unlockable achievements such as extra backgrounds, additional buggies or new course.

Vector Pilot

Vector Pilot

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - September 30, 2011

Vector Pilot is a faithful clone of Konami's Time Pilot, recreated entirely in vector graphics. Like in the original game you have to navigate your aircraft through 5 different epochs (1910 1940, 1972, 1984 and 2001), shooting enemy vessels to proceed to the next era. Extending the original game this version also features a bonus level, the option to unlock additional vessels and more unlockable features (like playing in reverse or tail gunner mode) hidden in the game. Uncommon for Vectrex games the cartridge contains an EEPROM to save highscores, unlocked items and calibration data. Vector Pilot is a tribute to the ground-breaking Avro Arrow jet aircraft of the 1950s.

Vector Vaders

Vector Vaders

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - March 8, 1996

March 8, 1996 marked a day of the rebirth of Vectrex games, as programmer John Dondzila unveiled Vector Vaders, which was not only the very first homebrew game for the machine, but it also started the plethora of new games for the Vectrex as well. Aside from having vector graphics and running a bit slow (although the game does speed up as more and more invaders are shot), this is a pretty standard Space Invaders-type game for the most part.

Vector Vaders Remix

Vector Vaders Remix

Vectrexagon

Vectrexagon

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2016

Vectrexagon is a rhythm action game similar to Hexagon. You control a triangle that can be rotated around a central hexagonal shape. The goal is to avoid touching further hexagons approaching the central hexagon from the borders of the screen for as long as possible. At least one of the sides of those approaching hexagons will be left open, so there is always room to escape. For distraction the whole game screen will constantly rotate around the center, occasionally changing the direction of rotation. Over time - to increase the difficulty - the shapes will start pulsating to the rhythm of the music, and the rotation speed will increase significantly when the soundtrack picks up a new theme. In contrast to the original Hexagon this vector based version is more simplistic: It does not feature any solid or advanced forms, only hexagons. Like the original this version contains only one song which is changing over time to match the gameplay. The game features two difficulty settings (Easy, Hard).

Both the robots and the seekers must be destroyed, but ammo is not infinite and must be used with care. When the player's ammo is completely spent, it's only a matter of time before game over. In a phase where a certain number of robots must be destroyed, the player is just a sitting duck; however, in a survival phase, it is possible to advance to the next stage if the player has enough health, then they can can wait out the time limit.

Web Wars

Web Wars

GCE Vectrex - Released - April 1, 1983

The player slips into the role of Hawk King. His mission is to search the Web of Fantasy for certain legendary creatures and collect them all. The Hawk King is controlled in a third person perspective, flying through the Web. The 20 creatures that can be captured are protected by drones, which can in turn be destroyed with the blaster weapon. Other actions the player can take is speeding up or slowing down the Hawk King, and extending a rod to capture a rare species once the player encounters one. After a creature has been successfully captured, the player enters the trophy room though a portal, which displays all captured creatures. If the player proves unsuccessful after two attempts however, they will have to face the Cosmic Dragon, at which point the only defence the player has left is avoiding its deadly fireballs.

Wormhole

Wormhole

GCE Vectrex - Homebrew - 2001

WORMHOLE – clone of the very classic arcade game Gyruss, where your ship spins around the screen in a giant circle to destroy as many enemy ships as possible. It’s amazing how far Dondzila came with the slow moving early releases of Vector Vaders and More Invaders! (from the All Good Things cartridge) to how incredibly fast the enemy ships swarm in and out of the center of the screen (the “wormhole”). At first this seems like Dondzila’s easiest game to date, since the ships can pass through you without harm and they don’t shoot back, but that won’t last for long (isn’t that always the way?). Making up for not having any of the cool music and the bonus stages, you’re granted three power-ups (rather than the arcade’s one) upon shooting special ships: double shots, destroying everything onscreen, and slowing down the action for several seconds. Pretty intense stuff…
