Apocalypse

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1990

A futuristic 3D space shooter. You are tasked with destroying a race known as the Rakonans. They have taken over a number of planets and it is your job to destroy the Rakonan colonies on these planets to an extent that they cannot survive and the planet is then 'sterlised'. It can then be re-colonised by the original inhabitants. Upon starting the game your craft descends to the planet surface and the battle begins. There are plenty of things to destroy, mainly on the ground, but from time to time you will come under attack from flying saucers and other things in the sky. You are initially based on the ground, but it is possible take off and fly your craft around in the air. However your craft's energy is drained much quicker when flying so to recharge the energy levels you need to return to ground level and stay still for a while. Your craft is protected by shields and they can take a number of hits before they are finally destroyed. Shields can be recharged by moving your craft away from enemy fire. Once the shields have been destroyed one single enemy shot will finish you off. As you progress around the landscape you will encounter buildings and objects, all of which can be destroyed. However some don't need to be, for example there are small houses which can be flattened but these are harmless so you don't really need to worry about them too much. You should pay more attention to the other objects that fire back at you - these need to disposed of as soon as you see them. When you have destroyed enough objects on the planet to sterilise it the mission will end. You will then be presented before the Royal Guild of Spacing who will assess your performance. You will also end up here when your game ends. There are nine planets to sterilise and at the start of the game only one is available so you have to complete each of the planets in order to gain access to the next one.

Boogie Buggy

Boogie Buggy

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

Boogie has arrived at Dodge City only to find that the Evil Monster Lord has taken control and has set about converting power-ore into evil-ore. He is using this to turn all the good in Dodge City into evil. As his power increases he starts to turn Dodge City into a stronghold for creatures of the darkness and other evil monsters and is plotting to take control of Bumper World. It is up to Boogie to put a stop to these evil plans. To do this you must travel across Dodge City counteracting the effect of evil-ore in each zone, you must also destroy each of the evil Ore Conversion Plants before finally coming face to face with the Evil Monster Lord himself. There are two types of level in the game, The Ore Conversion Plants - viewed from the side, and the City locations - viewed from above. In the City locations, the object is to collect all the pieces of evil-ore (of which there are 10) and then drop them down a manhole, then move around the level and collect the next piece of evil-ore and then drop that down a manhole. The process is repeated until the level is cleared of evil and is then good again. There are many bonuses to collect throughout the levels. In addition to the evil-ore there are plasters which will reduce your damage percentage, make sure you collect these at every opportunity as it is very easy to get Boogie damaged. Other pick ups include extra lives, turbo boosts, and bonus points. There's also a chainsaw which will become attached to the front of Boogie and is very useful for disposing of evil monsters, and banana skins which will send Boogie sliding about for a few seconds. The Ore Conversion Plant levels are a bit more straight forward, you start at the bottom of the screen and you must guide Boogie to the top of the screen to destroy the Ore Converter. This is achieved by reaching the polarity switch, and reversing it and then make your escape before everything blows up. When all the zones have been completed you will then enter the mine in the heart of the city and face the Evil Monster Lord and must defeat him to complete the game.

Break 147 & Superpool

Break 147 & Superpool

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

A Snooker and Pool simulator game. Break 147 is a snooker simulation. Upon loading you can choose which type of game you want. Demo mode in which 2 computer players will play against each other, Practice mode which is self explanatory, Match mode is a proper competitive match against the computer and finally in the tournament mode you play a different player in each round. The aim is to try and beat them all and get to the final and become the overall winner. With the single match mode and tournament mode, any of the opposition can be replaced by human opponents instead of the computer, so you can have up to 16 different people playing in the tournament if you so wish. Superpool is basically the same as Break 147 but instead of a game of snooker you play pool. The game set up is the same with Demo mode , Single match, and the Tournament mode, as with Break 147 the official rules of the game are followed, and it is played on the same table as before just with a different set of balls. The sound effects, the style of gameplay and everything else is the same.

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

The object of the game is to guide the water from the top of the screen into the collecting vessel at the bottom of the screen, you do this by guiding the water down the screen using blocks, pressure valves and filters. Monsters appear as the levels progress. Some of these are harmless and generally get in the way but others are nasty and can kill you on contact. Another breed of monster will also fire at you, luckily you have your gun so you can zap them. On later levels it's not just water that comes out of the pipes, but acid as well. This is dealt with in the same way but you must avoid contact with it. Other features which will appear throughout the game include remote control doors, dissolving blocks, and drip valves to name but a few.

Chocks Away

Chocks Away

Acorn Archimedes - Released - January 1, 1990

Chocks Away is a flight simulation game for the Acorn Archimedes. It was written by Andrew Hutchings and published by The Fourth Dimension. The game is loosely set in the First World War, though many elements are simplified and anachronistic. The player flies a single British Tiger Moth aircraft (despite the design dating from peacetime and being a trainer) on various missions against German forces. Free movement is allowed around each mission's map, though the aircraft does not have the fuel capacity to allow infinite roaming - instead it must return to the home airfield to refuel. The Tiger Moth carries a single fixed forward-firing machine gun with infinite ammunition. The player pilots the plane from an in-cockpit view, though a chase camera is used if they are shot down, showing the helpless demise of their aircraft.

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1997

Drifter is a racing game in the style of console games like Wipeout, in which you control a craft with jet engines and no actual contact with the ground. A number of different craft are included as well as the "Hyper" bonus craft, which travels much faster than any of the standard ones, and the "Exocet", which has an extremely useful self-repair feature. The computer drivers swerve to avoid you but they also make mistakes (crashing into walls and bridges), and can be quite aggressive (towards each other, as well as the player) when a suitable opportunity presents itself. Tracks are grouped into pairs, and when you can come first or second in both of a pair you are allowed to move onto the next two tracks.

Drop Ship

Drop Ship

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1990

The year is 2030 and planet Earth receives a transmission from a colony on Mars stating that there has been an outbreak of radiation and that their defence systems have gone haywire and are on the brink of meltdown. The only way to stop this is by shutting down all the reactors on the Mars colony - so guess what your mission is in this game? Dropship places you in control of a small ship and you must shut down the reactor on each of the 15 levels. However there is a bit more to this task than simply shutting them down, you have to collect all of the power crystals on each level. Once this is achieved then head to the exit and the level is complete and the reactor can be closed down. To obtain the crystals you need to destroy the crystal bases. When a base is destroyed the crystal will appear and float around the screen until it is collected. You will encounter numerous hazards on your mission to obtain the crystals. Most notably the defence systems which will shoot at you should you get near them, so blast them away before they do the same to you. On later levels you have to shoot pressure points to make doors open to let you into other parts of the level. There is also the added factor of gravity so should you not maintain thrust your craft will plummet towards the bottom of the screen, and if it hits anything then you will lose a life. During the game when you destroy aliens and defence systems, bonus credits will appear. Collect these and in between levels you can spend them in the shop to buy upgrades for your ship.

E Type

E Type

BBC Microcomputer System - Released - 1990

E-Type is a racing game similar to Outrun where the player gets to drive the titular sports car (although without the Jaguar license). The goal of the game is to drive as far as possible before time runs out. The game has five stages that differ in difficulty and length, from six to eighteen miles. Each stage has its own time limit. The tracks can be played separately or in one session. The stages are then unlocked by beating the time limit in the previous race. The roads are full of objects and most of them (rocks, trees and bushes) have to be avoided as crashes and collisions slow down the player. Exceptions are warning triangles which are worth points and suicidal boys who the player gets extra time for killing.

Enter the Realm

Enter the Realm

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

The object of Enter the Realm is to reach the end of each level, of which there are many, and then leave it through the exit. Along the way you will encounter many enemies both on the ground and in the air, all of which need to be destroyed. There are also a number of land obstacles including bombs, spikes and snowballs. Again these can be disposed of by shooting at them, or you can jump over them instead. You can also avoid enemies by crouching down and let them fly overhead. Some of the snowballs are quite tricky to destroy and it proves to be much easier to simply crouch down and let them fly by overhead. All creatures and obstacles which are destroyed will leave behind bonuses, some just add to your score, but others can be very useful and add more power to your weapon. Make sure you collect any hearts that appear as these will top up your energy levels, however they don't increase the number of lives you have. Whatever you do don't pick up the skull as this will do the opposite to the hearts and drain your energy levels. You start the game with 2 spare lives, each life has an energy bar which when it runs out means you lose a life. Beware as this energy bar level can drop really quickly sometimes if you run into a large pack of badies. Luckily there are bombs you can pick up which will clear all the enemies on the screen in one go. You can also pick up temporary invulnerability shields and a freeze potion which will temporarily freeze anything on the screen which will give you a chance to dispose of everything a bit more easily.

Holed Out!!

Holed Out!!

BBC Microcomputer System - Released - 1989

Holed Out!! is a golfing simulator programmed by Gordon J Key and published by The Fourth Dimension, aka The 4th Dimension (formerly Impact Software). It features two courses: Cone Links and Pine Isles. You can indulge in either strokeplay or matchplay. The idea with the former is to finish all 18 holes in the least number of strokes, while in matchplay the winner is the player who wins most holes. Up to four players can take part with each selecting one of four skill levels from beginner to professional. The one selected dictates whether the physical hazards or wind strength and direction influence your play. For instance, as a beginner only the water will affect your shot, whereas as a professional you could be playing from a bad lie in deep rough into a strong headwind. For all shots up to the green your view is from behind the golfer you control. On the right side of the screen is an information panel displaying details relevant to the hole. You select a club from a range of three woods, nine irons, a pitching wedge and a putter. A pair of standalone expansion packs were also released: Extra Courses Vol 1 featuring Glen Aigre and Eagle Park, and Vol 2 which comprised Dune Royal and Owlet Wood.

Inertia

Inertia

BBC Microcomputer System - Released - 1990

Inertia is a Marble Madness clone, written by D. Postlethwaite. The aim of Inertia is seemingly quite simple. You must guide your craft over all of the shaded tiles whilst avoiding falling off the landscape. The landscape is made up of a very large number of 3 dimensional varied screens. However, as you progress, the going will get very tough. A good memory and/or mapping will certainly be needed. Various icons along the top of the screen depict the sound status, which craft is in play, pause on/off, and the current direction of the controls (normal/reversed). The two vertical bars at the sides of the playing area slowly fill up, first the left, then the right. If a shaded tile has not been collected before the time elapses then you will lose a life. The timer is reset each time a tile is collected. The panel to the lower left of the playing area shows the number of lives remaining. A life is gained for each tile collected, and a maximum of 12 lives is allowed. The panel to the lower right of the screen gives an indication of the number of tiles left to be collected. Your current score is shown above this. You score five points for each tile collected and you lose three points for each life lost. When you lose a life you continue the game at the place where you last collected a shaded tile or sometimes at the last but one.

Man at Arms

Man at Arms

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1990

This is a scrolling maze game set in medieval times. The object of the game is to take over each of the four castles, which are spread over four levels. Once a castle is taken the level is complete and you move on to the next one. A castle is taken by achieving a certain number of points. These points are gained by killing enemies and collecting treasure. You are also against the clock, so when your time runs out you will lose a life. You can move left, right, up and down and also have a sword at your disposal to get rid of any enemies who get in the way. This sword is also used to remove certain parts of the scenery in order to progress further into the level. However this is limited so make sure you use the sword to destroy the correct parts of the landscape otherwise you will have to start again. Potions are also available which can make you invincible for a short period of time. There are many objects that you will encounter during the game. These all have different characteristics and you need to understand how they behave in order to deal with them. For example, stone boulders will fall downwards if unsupported. Wood panels when pushed will fall downwards providing what is beneath isn't solid otherwise they won't go anywhere. Hourglasses provide valuable extra time. Thorns will grow and block off areas so you need to stop them from doing so. There are lots of other objects on the levels which will help or hinder your progress.

Morph

Morph

Acorn Archimedes - Released

Morph is an arcade adventure with 15 levels. In order to complete a level you will have to solve a number of puzzles, and the ultimate objective is to find the magical gem. Once you have found it, you need to pick it up and use it, then you will be transported to the next level. On your way to obtaining the magical gem you will encounter all manner of obstacles which will try to prevent you from reaching your objective. Throughout the levels you will discover different objects which will be needed to solve the puzzles which will in turn allow you to progress further into the levels. Puzzles can be anything from opening a door with the right key or having to find a specific object to carry out a specific task. There are also pickup objects which include food, weapons and other items to help you through the quest. You can only carry a certain number of items at one time. These are stored in your pockets. You can only pick up items when you are the main character. When you have morphed into a different creature you cannot pick up items. You can only change into other creatures that you have collected the morph for. Morphs are scattered about the levels so watch out for them as by turning into those creatures you then gain certain special abilities. For example if you morph into a cat then you can jump much further than when you are the normal character. There are eight different characters in total. Watch out for other creatures as some will try to kill you while others will help you in your quest. The game also uses passwords, so you can skip early completed levels.

Pandora's Box

Pandora's Box

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

Pandora's Box is an isometric arcade adventure and as such it features both puzzle solving and fighting. The game's world is open ended and consists of over 200 interconnected screens. The aim of the game is to close Pandora's Box by collecting four emerald seals. Most of the gameplay involves exploring the world in search after various objects that are needed to progress. Some objects can simply be picked up from the ground while others can only be acquired by solving puzzles or trading with NPCs. Some characters also send the player out on errands in exchange for a reward. Often these are fetch quests where the player has to bring back certain objects. Puzzles generally involve activating objects at the right location or to combine them with other objects. Clues and quests are given on parchments that the player can find all around the world. The player takes damage when bumping into certain characters. At the start of the game the player is unarmed and can't defend himself but after doing some puzzles weapons will become available. Weapons are equipped from an inventory (consisting of an maximum of eight objects) and are used with the same activate button that is used for puzzles. Since the player is a sorcerer he can also create magical staffs and scrolls by mixing different objects in a cauldron.

Powerband

Powerband

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

Powerband is a Formula 1 racing game with three race modes: Fun, Practice and Championship. In Fun mode your car can survive any amount of damage and you can also drive backwards down the track. Also when you enter the garage certain special options are available: A super-powered engine and super-sticky tyres. Practice mode allows you to race properly, but before each one you go round the track to get a lap time which affects your starting position on the grid. Each track has its own fastest-time records and if you make it your name will be added to the list. When playing in a Championship you are presented with a new sub-menu page with just the garage and race options from the original screen available, but with the addition of load, save and quit icons. After the qualifying lap for position on the grid comes the first race - there are 10 on circuits chosen at random from the 16 available. As you prepare for each new race, you're given a brief rundown and map of the circuit you're about to tackle. The other main options on the menu screen are the Airport and the Garage. The former is used to change your track selection: Some tracks are easier than others, for exampe Hockenheim in Germany has long straights and few tight corners, whereas Suzuka in Japan has lots of alternating turns. At Monte Carlo and Detroit there are tunnels. The garage lets you alter six aspects of your car's performance. There are seven types of gearbox, including an automatic for beginners, three engine tuning levels, three types of tyre, front and rear aerofoils, and steering ratio.

Pushy

Pushy

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1997

The objective of the game is to remove all of the blocks on each level, on the first level there are 3 purple blocks and 3 green blocks. To remove these blocks you have to push them together into a row of 3 and then they will disappear, when all blocks have disappeared the level is complete. The blocks have to be removed in blocks of 3 which are all the same colour. You can push the blocks around the screen, however there are 6 different types of blocks, and when you push them them they will act as follows : the grey ones will only move one space at a time, the purple and red ones will move until they hit a wall or another block and the green, blue and orange ones will bounce off any walls and blocks just once before they stop. If you are in the firing line when they are moving you will get squashed and a life is lost. The monsters wander around the screen and any touch with them is fatal, however you can easily dispose of them by pushing any block over them and they will be flattened, but beware as after a while they will come back to life. Bonus tokens appear randomly throughout the level; these include extra lives, points and invincibility. The levels are against the clock and when the time expires a special monster called Dougie will appear and he will hunt you down The only way to dispose of him is to squash him with a moving block. you also have a ball which you can throw at the monsters to dispose of them, this ball does not work on Dougie. When you throw your ball it will stay in the place it landed so you will have to go and retrieve it so you can use it again. If you push a block which is directly next to another block it will be automatically moved to another place on the building site, this can be very useful to get the blocks together if you have got stuck. Unfortunately the block will end up in a random place so you could get lucky or be even worse off than you were before.

Pysanki

Pysanki

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1990

A Repton type maze game. The game is set in the future on the freighter Pysanki, which is on a fossil egg collection expedition (if you can imagine such a thing). However something has gone wrong and you have been sent in to clear the decks of the freighter. A deck is cleared when a certain number of points has been obtained. This is achieved by collecting certain eggs and also by killing the various nasties who inhabit the them. When the points total is reached the level is then complete and you can move onto the next one. There are eight levels; they start off relatively easy and get more difficult as the game goes on. There are plenty of obstacles and hazards on each deck. Some of these are useful and you need to find them, others can harm you or are just generally irritating. Some of the objects worth looking out for are Ammo racks (extra rockets), Nutrient (extra life) and a portal which gives instant level completion. A map feature is included for when you are trying to plan a route through the level. Obstacles on the levels to help hinder your progress include sliding doors, some open easily, others do not. Containers in different colours which can be useful or useless. By trial and error you will find out with ones to avoid. Also watch out for the slime which will kill you on contact.

Saloon Cars

Saloon Cars

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1991

Saloon Cars gives you the chance to take part in a touring cars championship. Upon loading you are presented with the main menu. From here you can watch the demo mode, set up the controls for the game, select a course and load or save a new player file. Then there is the race option which leads to the game itself. You can practice a track with or without other cars and then the actual race itself. Once you have qualified on the grid then the race can begin. The tracks you race around are real racing tracks, so Silverstone, and Brands Hatch are included, although since this game was released the real circuit layouts have changed. The pit lane also features in this game, as you can come in for pit stops and have your car worked on if there are any problems with it. When you start a race you can choose which car to race in subject to the amount of money you have, and the more races you win the more money you will have to upgrade to a better car. Whichever car you buy you have the option of having either automatic or manual gearboxes, plus the option of having large wheel arches and front or rear wheel drive. You can also upgrade your car throughout races with more powerful engines and better tyres. As an added bonus the original Saloon Cars Extra Tracks release is included which includes Oulton Park, Donnington circuits and a made up Seaside track.

The Time Machine

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1994

The Time Machine is a sort of sequel to Haunted House. It is another desktop graphic adventure and it uses the same game interface as before, and behaves in exactly the same way, but it is a totally new adventure. This time instead of collecting antiques from a spooky old house, you embark on an adventure through time and space in a blue box. You start the game out on the road in the countryside near a blue portaloo. The first task in this game is to get into the portaloo itself, which requires you to supply the password and also solve the Roman numeral puzzle. The door will then open and you can go in. There are a few useful items which you need to collect from the surrounding area of the portaloo before you disappear down various timelines. On your travels you will visit a number of planets such as Earth and Mars. You must perform tasks here which will affect the game later on, so if you get something wrong in the past then the future won't happen as it should do and it will mess the whole game up. Quite a lot of the puzzles are far more difficult to solve than the Haunted House ones.

The Wimp Game

The Wimp Game

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1990

The wimp game is a brilliant pointer driven graphic adventure celebrating over 10 years of Acorn Home Computers This was one of the early RISC OS games and was the first commercial game that operated just in the desktop. The game takes place in a house and your objective is to move through each room solving the puzzles within to gain access to the next room. The overall objective of the game is to become the owner of the best Acorn computer available, which at the time that this game was written was an R200 workstation. You start off as an Acorn Atom owner and along the way to your R200 workstation, you become the owner of an Electron, BBC Micro, BBC Master and A3000. There are no Risc PC's here, so it gives you an idea of how old the game is. You can click the mouse menu button over the main game screen at anytime during the game and highlight the 'Status' option to show you which Acorn machine you currently own. Control of the game is by the mouse, which involves pointing and clicking on items and artifacts in the room. Some of these are needed to complete the room, and others are simply red herrings. You can also kill yourself by touching (clicking) things that would normally harm you in the real world.

X-Fire

X-Fire

Acorn Archimedes - Released - 1992

The game takes place in a maze and the screen layout stays the same for every level, although the colours and the graphics do change to add a bit of variety. The object of the game is to guide your craft around the maze and blast everything that moves. When all the aliens have been destroyed the level ends. Each level contains a number of different nasties who each have their own strengths. The bug looking creature which is known as "Henry" is easy to dispose of but the "JCB" is indestructible from the front so you have to have to shoot at it from behind. On later levels mines get laid around the screen. There are power-ups to collect to assist you in the destruction of aliens. The best one is the "Immediate Zap" which destroys all aliens on the screen instantly. Other pick ups include bombs, shields and small zaps which you can collect and use as and when you need to.
