Ancient Space

Ancient Space

Windows

Ten years after a mysterious incident during the first failed exploration of the Black Zone, humanity starts a second attempt. The player takes control over the small expedition troop under the command of Dr. Willow Burke, but of course everything goes wrong. It starts with an attack from some pirates and everything goes only downhill from there... Ancient Space is a real-time strategy game which, similar to the Homeworld series, uses all three dimensions for unit movement. However, each of the 15 campaign missions is set in a relatively small area and features only a few (about two dozen) units at a time. The 15 ship types have different abilities (e.g. creating a protective shield or capturing enemy ships) and are especially effective (or ineffective) against certain other units. At defined points on the maps, the player can construct buildings (e.g. defense towers, repair stations or a detector for hidden enemy ships). The most important unit is the main ship Ulysses II which is used to build new ships and has some special abilities. Between missions the player can choose the crew of the Ulysses II (which change the available abilities) and upgrade unit types. Upgrade points are earned by finding hidden artifacts which can be found with the Rover unit's scan function. Besides the campaign there are three skirmish maps, but no multiplayer modes, available.

Elven Legacy is a turn-based strategy video game. The gameplay, like its predecessor, Fantasy Wars, is a turn-based strategy game. The player moves its units, each representing a single hero or a small soldiers company, through hexagonal maps dictating where they go and when they attack. Once all units have exhausted both their move points and their (single) action for the turn the pc-controlled enemies (or the other human players, if online) start their movements and actions. As with Fantasy Wars units are inspired from the typical fantasy races (Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Orcs etc.) in a fantasy-medieval setting (magic, bowmen and knights). Usually every mission requires a certain list of objectives to fulfill (kill certain enemies, or reach certain town on the map) with "prizes" awarded at the end of the mission based on how many turns the player needed to achieve them.

King Arthur II

King Arthur II

Windows - Released - January 27, 2012

King Arthur II: The Role-Playing Wargame ties directly to the end of its predecessor: after King Arthur managed to reunite the country everything seems fine. But two problems emerge: an evil witch sends her demon army against the royal family and Arthur is mortally wounded. So the player takes the role of Arthur's son William Pendragon. The basic playing principle is still a mixture between role-playing, turn-based strategy and tactical battles in real time. However, the complexity of the strategy map has been reduced (less province management) and the importance of quests and story is greater. One of the consequences is that the player is restricted to one army until two more are gained during the course of the plot. Both strategy and tactics bear resemblance to the Total War series: on the strategy map, troops are moved between provinces (only in summer turns), resources are managed (reduced to two) or provinces enlarged. Other options are research and diplomacy. During the tactical battles, battalions are moved against the enemy in order to defeat him. Of course it is important to use the correct type of units because everything has strengths and weaknesses. The quests, which can be started during the strategy part, either set a certain diplomatic or battle goal or start a sequence similar to choose-your-own-adventure books: a situation is presented in text form (this time fully voiced) and the player has to choose between several possibilities to proceed. Between certain in-game effects, the choices influence the hero's morality (good/tyrannical and Christian/Pagan) which in turn has effects on unlocked special abilities. The heroes (overall three) can unlock more skills as they earn experience points, too.

King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame

King Arthur: The Role-playing Wargame

Windows - Released - November 24, 2009

King Arthur is a mix between turn-based and real-time strategy similar to the Total War series. As the subtitle suggests there are also strong RPG elements. The player takes the role of the legendary King Arthur who wants to build and defend his empire. The first RPG element which comes into play are the quests - some have to be solved to progress the story; some of them are optional. They can also be divided into short-term tasks, e.g. rescuing a kidnapped relative of a prince, or long-term tasks, e.g. building a trade route. The former can be started by sending a knight to a defined point of the map and are reminiscent of choose-your-own-adventure books in which the player is presented with a text and several choices, e.g. tailing the kidnappers or talking to them, and has to choose one. This progresses the quest, leads to the next choice and ultimately to success, failure or a battle. But this is not just a question of choosing the right answer but also depends strongly on the character stats of the knight. This is the second RPG element in this game: the knights from the Round Table have personalities and abilities which can be improved after earning enough experience points by solving quests. There are also artifacts to find which can be equipped. The actions in the quests also affect the player's two morality bars: the choice between a nice guy and a tyrant respectively Christianity and the old religion. This mixture affects the relationship to other factions, available abilities, e.g. healing spells for a good Christian, and the effectiveness of certain artifacts. In the turn-based part of the game the player is presented with a world map where he moves his armies and conquers provinces by seizing all strategical important points. Of course there are also other things to do, e.g. trading, enacting laws or researching. One round represents one season which affects gameplay notable, e.g. in winter armies can't be moved but receive all experience points from the last year and in summer armies have the highest range. There are two resources: money and food. When the player meets an hostile army on the map screen there is a fight. It can be calculated automatically or played manually. Then the game switches to a real-time strategy game where the player commands a big army with many troops. Every army is commanded by one of the knights and his character stats have a influence on his units performance. During the battles the opponents have to conquer flag points which raise their morality and lowers the opponent's - the same effect happens when kidnapping the hostile leader. Of course all unit types - which can be upgraded too - have different advantages and disadvantages and a big part of the tactics consists of using them in the right way. The multiplayer-mode is restricted to the real-time battles.

Mount & Blade: Warband

Mount & Blade: Warband

Windows - Released - March 30, 2010

Although Mount&Blade: Warband is called a stand-alone expansion pack to Mount&Blade, it is more of an enhanced remake of the original. As stated, the core single player experience is unchanged to the original. Mount&Blade: Warband still is open-ended, nonlinear and focuses on realistic medieval warfare, combining character development elements with strategy management, exploration of the game world, and full real-time combat. Again the playing field is two-fold with an overhead map of the country where the player only sees figurative representations of castles, towns, own as well as enemy armies, etc., and the 3D real-time battles with up to a total of 150 units on the battlefield. Both single and multiplayer modes feature improved graphics with motion-capture animations and more detailed textures. Combat itself has also been slightly altered with improved mechanics for soldier morale and the ability to use most throwing weapons in close combat. New Faction and Diplomacy Features To the several different non-player character (NPC) kingdoms of the original, a new faction (the Sarranid) has found its way into the game which includes an expansion of the map with a new desert region for the player to explore and conquer. New gameplay mechanics include the ability to become king and create a new faction including convincing lords of other factions to become the players vassals. The player may also upgrade own companions to vassals and grant them lands (applies only to creating a new faction). In addition to becoming king, the player may now also marry a lady (or a lord, if playing a woman) through poetry or bravery, which will open up a whole new range of diplomatic possibilities, if the player is in ownership of a castle or town. Since the player still has total freedom to do as they wish, several new types of quests are waiting to be found and solved, many new companions are waiting in the taverns and a horde of new equipment to be collected or bought. Multiplayer Multiplayer is a new feature previously unavailable in the vanilla version. The game expands many aspects of the core game, improves the overall graphics and features multiplayer for up to 64 people (or bots) in which they can fight their 3D battles in the game modes Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Conquest, Battle, and Siege. Each mode is class-based and the player has to decide whether the player wants to fight as archer, cavalry or infantry. The class choice influences the gear the player starts with, but as in the single player game, the player can always pick up what lies on the ground. Another way to get better gear is to buy it after each death with the money earned through killing enemies.

Mount & Blade: Warband

Mount & Blade: Warband

Microsoft Xbox One - March 30, 2010

You play as an adventurer in the medieval land of Calradia, a fictional land devoid of magic and high fantasy, instead bearing many similarities to our world in the Middle Ages. The game offers you a great deal of freedom in this world. You may roam around the map visiting towns and villages, trading, pursuing various quests, taking part in tournaments, or trying out a myriad of other activities. You will soon notice that the world itself is dynamic. Caravans travel between towns, sometimes being waylaid by bandits; villagers take their goods to markets; armies assemble to move across the land, besieging towns or castles and raiding settlements. Instead of giving you a fixed path to follow, Mount & Blade: Warband lets you freely adventure in this world. In time, you will be well known in many places as you make friends and enemies with other characters, which in turn will allow you to affect events in profound ways. You don’t need to remain a penniless adventurer, either. You may obtain great wealth and power, become one of the trusted vassals of a king; conquer and own villages, castles and towns; command armies, and if you like, even lead rebellions and replace kings with other claim holders. And who knows? If you are great and cunning warrior you might one day become the Ruler of Calradia.

Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword

Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword

Windows - Released - May 3, 2011

Mount&Blade: With Fire and Sword continues the saga, this time in the gunpowder age of medieval Eastern Europe. The player starts with a pre-generated male character (character creation has been disabled, however the player may still customize the physical features) in the outskirts of Smolensk, in Polish territory. To survive, the player must once again gain reputation from one of the available factions: the Polish Republic currently allied with Crimean Khanate is at war with the Cossack Hetmanate, who are allied with the Muscovite Tsardom. The powerful Kingdom of Sweden awaits the outcome of the war. Although still an open-world game, a few faction-specific plots now may be pursued by the player. Mercenary camps is a new feature allowing the player to hire region-specific units. These mercenaries may be upgraded in weapons and armor for a price. One mercenary camp is available per faction. All crossbow weapons have now been replaced with firearms, capable of delivering devastating damage, though with a slow loading process, slightly lower accuracy, and lower levels of ammunition. Firearms come into two versions: muskets and pistols. Muskets have longer range, damage, and more angle when firing from a horse. Pistols are noticeably faster in reloading time, however have shorter range, and may only be fired frontally from a horse. The player may now send (and accompany) caravans between towns and castles as an alternate to profit. The previous income feature of building investment has been replaced with this new feature.

Gripping, Turn-Based Tactical Combat: When you’re running the shadows, every turn matters. Choose your actions wisely - move to better cover, charge into melee, or lob a fireball into a crowd of enemies. With over 200 weapons and spells at your disposal, every turn is filled with meaningful choices. Skill-Based Character Progression: Choose a starting character archetype and build from there! Shadowrun: Hong Kong

Shadowrun: Hong Kong

Windows - Released - August 20, 2015

Shadowrun: Hong Kong is the third entry in HareBrained Schemes' Shadowrun series. The technical and design framework is mostly identical to the previous Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut. In this story, which is except for a few references and recurring minor characters unconnected to the predecessors, the player character travels to Kong Kong on request by his/her former foster father Raymond Black. After meeting up with Duncan Wu, who used survive together with the player character in the Seattle slums, things go very wrong: The Hong Kong Police shoots one of Wu's associate as well as half of a Shadowrunner team employed by Black. Branded as terrorists, they have no choice but to seek the help of a Triad crime boss in order to erase their identities and start their search for Black... The basic gameplay formula is unchanged: the team takes on a number of unconnected missions until the plot is concluded during the last few missions. There are also three missions especially associated to the main team members. Between runs, the player returns to the hub (a Triad controlled district) in order to receive rewards for successful runs, chat up people and stock up on equipment. While many runs can be solved with minimal combat by choosing the correct dialogue options or having the team members with the required skills, there will be times when the player has to engage in turn-based combat. This part of the game is relatively straightforward: each combatant has a number of action points which can be used to either move or use skills in order to win the fight. The available skills depend on the used weapons respectively if they were unlocked during character development; the primary team members also have unique abilities. Solved tasks reward karma points (combat in itself does not) which are directly used to advance in the skill trees, e.g. quickness improves ranged combat and charisma gives more taking options and allows to summon spirits. Each of the superordinate skills (except body which mostly influences hit points) are the main stat for one of the class archetypes, but skill distribution is free.

Ship Simulator Extremes

Ship Simulator Extremes

Windows - August 27, 2007

Ship Simulator Extremes is the name of the latest installment in the Ship Simulator series. It was released on August 27, 2010. Additions to the game include new locations around the world from cold Antarctica to warm Bora Bora as well as new ships (including official licensed Greenpeace vessels) and new dynamic and more realistic weather and water systems. Most vessels from Ship Simulator 2008 are also part of the choice of ships. The cruise ship "Ocean Star" from Ship Simulator 2006/2008 is also included, except outside colors have changed and the name changed to "Orient Star". Vessels have more usable controls and more realistic ones, unlike Ship Simulator 2008 in which only the whistle, binoculars, thrust, rudder and thrusters (if applicable on the vessel) are usable, although you can listen to the ship's radio but not send out calls. Sinking dynamics and physics have also improved in Ship Simulator Extremes. Also unlike Ship Simulator 2008, you can launch lifeboats/motorboats off a vessel with them equipped. Following a campaign by members of their growing fanbase, VSTEP agreed to include the ports of Dover and Calais (in one environment). The game has been criticized for not being able to run on very powerful computers for no reason, requiring high graphical performance and like its predecessors not being able to use your own ships. Due to this, the fan base membership is becoming quiet and even some loyal members have left or thinking to leave.

Two rival branches of the Royal House of Plantagenet - the house of Lancaster (the reds) and the house of York (the whites) – fight over the throne, and the player is thrown into the fray. The years of 1455-1485 in England are an extraordinary setting filled with conflict, treachery and bloodshed. In the wake of the “death of chivalry” at Agincourt in 1415 and the introduction of gunpowder, warfare changed - the gloves came off, so to speak. The old and the new clashed on the battlefield while personal vendettas motivated the desire for war. War of The Roses sees players go toe-to-toe with their opponents using authentic and visceral weapons of the time period including broad swords, long bows and battle-axes.
