#IDARB

#IDARB

Microsoft Xbox One - Released - February 1, 2015

#IDARB is a multiplayer arena ball game set in a 2D platform environment in which players compete on teams to try to score goals utilizing a ball. It supports up to eight players locally. In addition to the base game, players can customize their characters, and create victory songs and team logos via in-game tools. Food recipes can be unlocked by completing achievements, participate in betting on AI games in the Fantasy Gambling mode, and completing a single player mode with a comedic storyline. A distinct feature of the game, referenced through the hashtag in the title, is the hash bomb, which allows observers to influence in-game events via messages from a user-designated Twitch channel or sent to the Twitter account @idarbwire followed by a four digit unique game identifier. Hash bombs consist of a "#" followed by a word (i.e., a hashtag). The list of supported words has not been released by the developer, leading to much experimentation. After an initial prototype of a red box in a platform environment, the game's content was largely crowd sourced through Twitter messages. The game's name is short for I Drew A Red Box.

10 Computer Hits

10 Computer Hits

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

10 Computer Hits is the first in what would prove to be a lucrative series of compilations for Beau Jolly. Although published on all of the main 8-bit formats of the time, the content of the compilations varied from machine to machine by virtue of Beau Jolly's policy of picking up cheap licences from publishers who generally didn't have enough material (or funds) of their own to publish a compilation of their own. The compilation was also notable for being one of the first to be advertised on British televison. Games included were: * Chuckie Egg (A 'n' F) * Pinball Wizard (CP Software) * Killer Gorilla (Micropower) * Heroes of Karn (Interceptor) * Special Operations (Lothlorien) * Flight Path 737 (Anirog) * Ghouls (Micropower) * Defend or Die (Alligata) * The Covenant (PSS) * Jack and the Beanstalk (Thor) While most of these were older titles when the compilation was released, The Covenant was still viewed as fairly new (having been released only two months earlier).

10 Computer Hits 2

10 Computer Hits 2

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1986

10 Computer Hits 2 is the second in the Computer Hits series of compilations and once again sees Beau Jolly scooping up the licence for a number of games from different software houses and publishing as a single collection. Games included were: * 3D Starstrike (Realtime Games) * Super Pipeline II (Taskset) * Technician Ted (Hewson) * Android 2 (Vortex) * Mutant Monty (Artic) * Codename Mat (Micromega) * Moon Buggy (Anirog) * World Cup (Artic) * Gauntlet (Micropower) * Fantasia Diamond (Hewson)

10 Computer Hits 3

10 Computer Hits 3

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1987

10 Computer Hits 3 is the third installment in the popular line of Computer Hits compilations. Settling into a familiar pattern, Beau Jolly have published a range of games from different software houses across different genres. Games included were: * Herbert's Dummy Run (Mikro-Gen) * Hi-Rise (Bubble Bus) * On the Run (Design Design) * The Devil's Crown (Probe) * Wriggler (Romantic Robot) * Dynamite Dan (Mirrorsoft) * Elidon (Orpheus) * Juggernaut (CRL) * Geoff Capes Strongman (Martech) * Cauldron (Palace)

10 Computer Hits 4

10 Computer Hits 4

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1988

The 10 Computer Hits series rolls on with this, its penultimate release. By this point a number of software houses were releasing their own back catalogue collections making it harder for Beau Jolly to scoop up cheap licences to repackage the games in these packs. With the market becoming more crowded, Beau Jolly felt the need to increase the number of games available on the packs but rather than dilute their brand, they offered two 'free' games, increasing the overall number of titles to 12 for this edition. Games included were: * Bride of Frankenstein (39 Steps) * Spindizzy (Electric Dreams) * Pulsator (Martech) * Sacred Armour of Antiriad (Palace) * Revolution (Vortex) * Triaxos (39 Steps) * Deactivators (Reaktor) * Uchi Mata (Martech) * City Slicker (Hewson) * Starquake (Bubble Bus) * Elektra Glide (English Software) * Dandy (Electric Dreams)

10 Second Ninja X

Sony Playstation Vita - Released - July 16, 2016

10 Second Ninja X is the sequel to 10 Second Ninja with the same concept. In several small levels the player controls a ninja who has ten seconds to kill all robots. The background story is different. There is no Robot Hitler like in the original game, but now a pirate captain called Greatbeard who has captured all the animals the ninja protects and has turned them into robots. This, along with some other references, is a nod to Doctor Robotnik from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. While ten seconds is the minimum amount of time, players are encouraged to complete levels much quicker. This is to compete against other players on worldwide leaderboards, but also to earn up to three stars needed to unlock new sets of levels. The basic controls remain identical. The ninja can move left or right, (double) jump, attack with a sword and throw up to three shuriken per level. Greatbeard's zeppelin acts as a hub where different sets of levels can be accessed. The game has about 100 levels including the 40 levels of the original 10 Second Ninja remastered for this edition. Levels often have obstacles such as spikes and are meant to be played many times in succession to try different strategies and get faster times.

100 Rooms of Enemies

100 Rooms of Enemies

Super Nintendo Entertainment System - ROM Hack - June 24, 2015

Do you like the "Pit of 100 Trials" side-challenges from the Paper Mario games? If you did, then you'll sure like this concept. 100 Rooms of Enemies is a enemy rush platformer that consists of 100 setups for the player to go through. Think of this as if you're in an arcade game; you essentially try to improve your record as you die many times. If you succeed to conquer Room 100, you'll be prized with a reward that stands as a reminder that you completed the game. What kind of prize? You'll have to improve all of your skills to find out! There are two versions of 100 Rooms of Enemies that you can try out: -100 Rooms of Enemies (Arcade Mode) A mode where you can die up to 5 times before restarting... -100 Rooms of Enemies (Do or Die Mode) A mode where you only have one shot to get through all 100 rooms. How far can you go in this mode?! Now here's my question: do you have the strategies and skills to conquer all 100 Rooms?

1000 Amps

1000 Amps

Windows - Released - February 22, 2012

1000 Amps is a monochrome puzzle game played as a platformer. The player controls Plug and has to restore the energy in the Amp-Tree-System. It has been disabled by an intruder and Plug needs to find a way to bring the power back to the four branches. The game is presented as a 2D platformer but without enemies or ways to die; the focus is entirely on solving puzzles based on various gameplay mechanisms. A main one is that most rooms are dark and they light up when Plug is nearby or bumps into the different tiles it comprises. That way, platforms, usually made out of tiles, become visible until the room is left. There are also antennas that lighten up all tiles for a short time. This can be used to plan a course of action. The energy in a room (and visibility of everything) can be restored permanently by activating energy nodes. Rooms usually consist out of multiple nodes and they all need to be activated to "clear" a room. Leaving a room without finding them all returns everything to the initial situation. An additional use of the energy nodes is that they each provide a charge to Plug's internal energy system. By activating a node he can jump higher and consequently reaches higher areas. To find all nodes, they often have to be found in a logical way through the improved abilities. The jumping system is disabled when a new room is entered, unless all energy has been previously restored there. Added in the mix is a variety of tiles that can only be crossed in a single way, tiles that push Plug in a certain direction like an escalator, and tiles that appear automatically. Many rooms have tiles with a small border to the edge of a room that can be used to access a new room. Further in the game puzzles often exist of sequences spanning multiple rooms that can be approached from different directions. During the game Plug can find five seeds. When all of them are found, all energy rooms can be enabled instantly when a room is accessed. A final mechanism introduced early on in the game is teleportation. Plug is controlled through the keyboards keys, but once the teleportation technique has been mastered, the mouse can be used to select an area anywhere in the room for Plug to teleport to. It can also be done in mid-air while jumping. This drains the collected charge in the room however and teleportation can only be done in empty spaces, which are not always visible when the room has not been fully explored. There are 150 rooms in total.

1001 Spikes

1001 Spikes

Sony Playstation Vita - Released - June 3, 2014

1001 Spikes is a platform game developed and published by Nicalis. Originally named Aban Hawkins & the 1001 Spikes, the game's objective is to escape a vast terrain and struggle to reach for victory without getting plummeted by spikes and many other disasters. Throughout the multiple travels, the game gets increasingly challenging, especially having to dodge falling stones and much more.

1001 Spikes

1001 Spikes

Windows - Released - June 3, 2014

1001 Spikes is a difficult platformer designed with the retro aesthetics of an 8-bit game. It is an enhanced version of Aban Hawkins & 1000 Spikes. It was remade entirely with an improved visual style, more than twice the levels, redesigned levels, additional modes and additional characters. The protagonist is Aban Hawkins who explores different environment in search for his father, the archeaologist Jim Hawkins, and the treasure of Poko-Mum rumoured to be behind a golden door. He travels through Antarctica and South America with locations such as jungle, caverns and lava temples. The title references the amount of lives the player has to complete the game. These are needed to complete the hard levels filled with enemies and traps such as spikes, boulders, falling platforms, crushing blocks, etc. – requiring a lot of trial and error. Basic controls consist of movement, a regular and a high jump, and an attack move (both melee and ranged). It is also possible to talk to characters at certain moments. A large amount of characters and additional costumes can be unlocked throughout the game, usually by discovering gold skulls in levels. Certain characters have specific abilities. The character Ninja Aban for instance is able to brief hold on to walls and perform a wall jump, Tina Hawkins (his sister) can cling to walls, and President Thompson has a double jump. Other characters are variants of Aban such as Soldier Aban and Slayer Aban (a nod to Castlevania), or characters from indie games such as Meat Boy (Super Meat Boy), Nyx (NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits), Curly Brace (Cave Story), Commander Video (Bit.Trip) and a large amount from Super Time Force. There are also references to classic games such as Ghost 'N Goblins' Sir Arthur's white armour, Nathan Drake (Uncharted) for the PlayStation version and Mr. Video Game (Mario) for the Wii U and 3DS version. Each character has its own story elements, but cannot be swapped on the fly or between levels; they each have their full campaign. Spikes are the common hazard to avoid and most levels have a key required to open the door that leads to the next level. For the first part of the game players have the ability to skip certain levels, but this locks off the second part of the campaign where this is disabled. That means that to complete the entire game, eventually all levels need to be completed, but it is possible to access a world map and return to any of them. The story mode contains 61 levels and the entire games has more than 100 levels. The game can locally be played cooperatively with up to four players and also in a versus mode. Next to the main story mode there are three arcade modes called The Golden Vase, Tower of Nannar, and The Lost Levels. The first is the versus mode where players fight each other to beat coins out of vase. These coins, also found in the story mode, can be spent in a shop for unlockables. The other two are additional campaigns for solo or cooperative play. The Vita and 3DS versions lack the arcade modes and multiplayer.

140

140

Windows - Released - October 16, 2013

140 is a minimalistic puzzle platformer where timing is often tied to the rhythm of the music and visuals. The player controls a white cube that can go left, right or jump in an abstract environment with pulsating visuals and music. The cube changes form based on movement; it turns into a ball going left or right, and into a triangle when jumping. This is purely an aesthetic change and has no influence on the gameplay. The game consists of three large levels divided into smaller sections with checkpoints. To progress various platform puzzles need to be completed. These include regular jumps, temporary and moving platforms, grey parts that cannot be touched, temporarily reversed gravity, platform movement based on sound and more. To complete a section a small ball needs to be collected. When it is brought back to a large container, the next section is loaded. Each of the three levels ends with a boss encounter, each time with a completely different mechanic to defeat them. When the game is completed a mirror mode is unlocked where each of the three levels can be replayed in reverse. In addition these need to be completed in one go as dying immediately returns you to the main game hub.

1994 (Ten Years After)

1994 (Ten Years After)

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - January 10, 1984

Hi, my name is Smiffy (no relation to the other one), the trouble is, Mr Orwell got it all wrong, not the principle, mind you, just the date. It all happened 10 years after i.e. 1994. The bane of my existence is the Central Computer. In fact, it's the bane of eveyone's existance. So, being of inventive mind and adventurous nature, I decided enough was enough. I was going to switch the Computer off. Easier said than done, though. In this case I very nearly was (done, that is). Stepping out into the corridors of power which housed this Omnipotent beast I found that all was not sweetness and light: in fact, there was not very much light and very little of it was sweet. In short, I was soon dodging plasma bolts from the spy cameras, jumping over the infamous 'jelly droids' (no trifle, I can assure you), leaping in and out of lifts, and generally having a very paranoid time of it. How I ever managed to achieve my aim I'll never know, so I'll leave it to you to find out. There are only either levels of play, plus a host of hazards I haven't even mentioned. You'll learn - it will take time, but you'll learn.

1994 (Ten Years After)

1994 (Ten Years After)

Commodore 64 - Released - 1983

You are Smiffy, a person locked in the world of George Orwell's "1984." The book's totalitarian-spying concept is updated for the early-eighties, when the game was produced. Instead of humans monitoring other humans through the television screen, everything is controlled by a Central Computer. Smiffy decides to turn the computer off, and your adventure begins. The game is a platform game. In Orwell's book, gigantic buildings dominated the landscape, and whole worlds could be hidden inside them. One of these buildings holds the Central Computer, and the game platforms are the corridors inside the building. You jump over monsters, duck flying objects, and work your way ever upward. Moving through the levels, you work toward the computer. This game came out in 1983-84, when people were looking at Orwell's book, and seeing that his predictions were not perfect. Some felt that he had got his date wrong. This game plays on that idea, by moving the date back another ten years.

2 Games in 1: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom + SpongeBob SquarePants: Supersponge

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - 2004

The two will however only help SpongeBob if he runs several errands for them first, like getting them a meal or a facial treatment. The game is a traditional side-scrolling platformer consisting of five worlds of four levels each. In every level, the goal is to collect one particular ingredient for fulfilling the latest errand. Swimming or lying in SpongeBob's way are various hostile sea creatures he can dispatch with a slap from his giant red glove. In addition, he can pick up several items that allow more options, like several different weapons, including a fishing net, a coral blower and a jelly gun - all can be used to collect ammunition in the form of jellyfish or coral which can then be fired. A balloon allows SpongeBob to glide. A beating heart shows SpongeBob's health - should it get too low, he can refill it by picking up fast food items like milkshakes, fries and burgers. He can also collect spatulas - picking up 50 of them awards an extra life. Extra lives can also be found in the form of an extra pair of underpants. Every world ends with a boss battle. One level takes place in Sandy Cheeks' home tree. There, SpongeBob must periodically refresh himself at a water puddle or dry out and lose a life. The Battle for Bikini Bottom begins with SpongeBob and Patrick playing with their robot toys. The former wishes that the robots would come to life. Meanwhile, in the Chum Bucket, Plankton has planned on creating a robot army and use them to take over the world. Not only that, he will also achieve in getting the Krabby Patty formula. Plankton has created a device called the Duplicatotron 3000, a device used to spawn robots. Unfortunately for him, the robots disobey him because the switch is on disobey. Because of that, Plankton is kicked out of the Chum Bucket. SpongeBob wakes up in the next morning to see his house has been trashed. When he goes outside, he sees Plankton. The latter makes lies to SpongeBob that robots came out of nowhere and wrecking havoc in Bikini Bottom. Fooled by this, SpongeBob plans to stop the robots. By the time he and his friend go to the Chum Bucket, SpongeBob has finally discovered that Plankton is behind the entire plot. He admits that he is planning on using a robot army for his purposes. When SpongeBob tells him that his robots are causing a rampage, Plankton tells him that it is because the switch to his device is on disobey method and tries to get the robots to his command. Unfortunately, a robotic version of himself refuses to allow that and sends a gigantic SpongeBob robot to deal with SpongeBob which he defeats both of them.

2 Games In 1: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie + SpongeBob SquarePants and Friends in Freeze Frame Frenzy

Nintendo Game Boy Advance - Released - October 21, 2005

Nicktoons: Freeze Frame Frenzy is a side-scrolling picture-taking game involving characters from various Nickelodeon cartoons such as The Fairly OddParents, Spongebob Squarepants, Danny Phantom, and Rocket Power. An unknown antagonist has begun scrambling the different universes of the Nicktoons, characters being flung into each other's worlds as robotic copies try to integrate into their societies during the chaos. Assuming the role of one of the main characters from the represented franchises, players are instructed by Jimmy Neutron to head to the worlds of the Nicktoons and use a specially designed camera to return characters to their home dimensions while also finding and defeating the robot doppelgangers. Players are able to move their chosen character around a set walking area to avoid hazards and get better angles for their free-moving camera cursor. Taking pictures of objects in the environment can reveal characters, and many characters require repeated snapshots to perform actions or return to their home dimension. Each level has a score threshold that needs to be beaten by taking pictures of characters and interesting sights, with many smaller side objectives like photographing a specific interaction between characters providing point bonuses if they're completed. Boss fights also cap off each world where players must survive attacks and snap three good shots of the robot duplicates. In Spongebob Squarepants Movie someone has stolen King Neptune's crown, and Mr. Krabs is the main suspect. Despite having been passed over for a promotion by Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and his faithful (but dimwitted) friend Patrick volunteer to make the perilous journey to Shell City to retrieve the crown and save Mr. Krabs' life. Play as SpongeBob or Patrick as they interact with characters from the movie, earn "manliness" points to gain power-ups, and explore vast environments in the "Patty Wagon."

3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2

3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Nintendo 3DS - Released - August 15, 2010

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a side-scrolling platformer based around speed, and the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog. Like the original, players run through different worlds called "zones", which each have their own specific theme. There are two Acts in nearly all of the 10 Zones, and at the end of each Zone's last Act is a machine that Robotnik controls, which you must defeat to progress. The evil Dr. Robotnik wants to conquer the world. In order to do that, he imprisons and transforms all animals into robots called "Badniks". This way they can build his powerful weapon, the Death Egg. Only Sonic the Hedgehog, and his new tagalong partner, Miles 'Tails' Prower, can stop Robotnik and his army of Badniks from taking over the world. Sonic and Tails can collect rings which are scattered throughout all of the levels. As with most platformers, when the player collects 100 rings, they earn an extra life. However, the rings also act as protection; if Sonic is hurt when he is carrying rings, they scatter everywhere and he is briefly invincible. If he is hit again when he has no rings, he'll lose a life. If the player reaches a continue point lamppost with 50 or more rings, they'll be able to access the Special Stage. In this stage, you must gather a set amount of rings in a halfpipe-like stage before you reach a checkpoint. Complete all the checkpoints and you'll earn one of the seven Chaos Emeralds. New to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the ability to play the game co-op with a friend - at any time, a player can plug in a second controller and take over the AI controlled Tails. Tails has infinite lives and the camera remains focused on Sonic, meaning that Tails will not hinder play. Sonic (and Tails) can now also get speed from a standing start by holding down and repeatedly pressing the jump button for a "spin dash". This is useful when stuck near steep slopes or other areas where you need some momentum. The game also features a 2-player versus mode. This mode is a horizontally split-screen race through levels based on three of the zones in the single player game. The mobile version (iOS/Android) contains ten new levels in a new environment called Hidden Palace Zone, a boss attack mode, upgraded graphics, faster frame rate, a re-mastered soundtrack, and Knuckles as a third playable character.

404Sight

404Sight

Windows - Released - April 16, 2015

404Sight is a free game made in support of net neutrality. It’s a 3D playground runner influenced by parkour running with the addition of a special ping ability that reveals areas that can speed the player up or slow them down. Hidden fast and slow lanes become visible, so it takes a bit of planning to plot a course through a world full of hazards – especially when the internet service providers themselves are actively trying to impede the player’s progress. In 404sight, the player attempts to traverse a level as quickly as possible without getting throttled by the ISPs, who actively throws slow tiles and inhibitors in their way. This game was made by Retro Yeti Games, a team of graduate students currently enrolled in the Entertainment Arts and Engineering program at the University of Utah.

4KKong

Oric Atmos - Homebrew - 2003

4KKong is an Oric port of Nintendo's Donkey Kong Dual Screen handheld game. The game is all about saving a damsel in distress captured by a giant ape. The player needs to climb up a construction site, avoid metal platforms and barrels thrown by the enemy, and finally activate a crane in order to dislodge some hooks until Donkey Kong falls down. Technically the game is trying to look exactly like the original LCD screen based game, with fixed position "sprites" instead of smoothly animated elements. The game itself plays like the original, using the arrows keys to move the character around and space to avoid the obstacles.

6180 the moon

6180 the moon

Nintendo 3DS - Released - June 29, 2017

6180 the moon is a puzzle platformer where you control the moon. The Sun is gone and the moon visits different planets and stars (Earth, Venus, Mercury, Sun) to find it back. There are five worlds in total with ten levels each. At certain moments the story is furthered through conversations in short sequences. To complete a level you need to move to the right over platforms to reach an exit gate. The platform mechanics remind of VVVVVV. When the moon drops off a platform through the bottom of the screen it reappears at the top. This speed increase can be used as a slingshot mechanic to cross gaps or to dodge spikes. There is an amount of gravity however. The moon can jump fairly high an when it breaks through the top, it has enough speed to reappear through the bottom at largely the same height. This curve needs to be used as well to complete puzzles. More complex levels are split up with checkpoints represented through white squares and there is an unlimited amount of allowed retries. Next to the platforms and the spikes, additional gameplay elements are introduced gradually. There are temporary blocks that can be used once to bounce and then disappear. Other blocks appear and disappear with a time interval. Small drops of light, left behind by the Sun, can be used once to perform a dodge jump in mid-air after an initial jump. After completing the main levels all of them can be replayed reversed, making a total of 100 levels. Controls are limited to three keys, to move left and right and jump, and the space bar to perform the dodge jump.
