3 x 3

3 x 3

Commodore 64 - Released - 1987

3 x 3 is a German language 3 round quiz game and was published in Input 64 1987/02. General knowledge is required for this game. Whoever has collected the most points at the end of the three rounds wins. And we've already got to the heart of the matter. In this game, the number "three" is dominant, which means: There are three playing fields, one for each round. Each playing field consists of three by three boxes and up to three people can participate. After the title picture you can enter the names of the individual players. The program accepts one, two or three players. The length of the names is limited to ten characters. If you want to play with or without a partner, press the left arrow key after entering the player names. A list with eight areas appears in the lower half of the screen. The arrow shows you which area you can activate with the RETURN key. Here, too, the "three" is used again, because three areas must be selected. The beep that can be heard when each button is pressed can be switched on or off (toggle) with the "£" (round button). The area clicked is activated or not activated with the RETURN key. You can use the left, right, up and down cursor keys to move the arrow itself to the area you think you know the most about. Again, after three areas have been selected, click left button to advance. Now that everything is selected, let's get to the actual gameplay. Three playing fields can be seen in the upper half of the screen. One for each round. In each of these fields, the smaller squares are marked with numbers from 1-9. In the lower half of the screen, the names of the individual players are listed on the far left and the points in the middle. The respective round, the associated area and the input window are displayed on the right-hand side. In the first round the game is played on the flak, in the second round on the middle field and in the third round on the right field. The arrow to the right of the scoreboard shows which player has to answer the next question. To do this, you can select one of the nine boxes on a playing field by entering a number (1-9) in the input field and confirming with the RETURN key. The bottom half of the screen will be cleared and a question from the first selected area will appear. If you don't want to or can't answer this question, simply press the RETURN button. In this case, the message WRONG will appear and points will be deducted if you have already collected any. If you now press the space bar (space) you will come back to the previously mentioned picture and the next player will be shown and can make his selection. If you answer the question correctly, 100 points will be credited to the respective account and the box will be filled with the color in which the respective player name is written. There is a bonus if you have correctly answered all questions in the three boxes in a row, column or diagonal. This bonus is indicated by these three boxes flashing in different colors. Each of the nine boxes on a playing field can have up to three questions, depending on the number of players. With one player, each box is assigned only one question, with two or three players, one or two more questions are assigned. If no more questions are allowed in a box, the number of the respective box is deleted.

30 Years Of Nintendon't

30 Years Of Nintendon't

Sega Genesis - Unlicensed - 2019

30 Years ago, in 1988, SEGA released the Megadrive home console in Japan. In 1989, the machine was released in the USA under the name Sega Genesis. To convince players that the 16-bit Megadrive / Genesis was better than the then-ageing Nintendo NES console, Sega created ads with a brilliant headline: "Genesis does what Nintendon't". "30 Years of Nintendon't" is a tribute to the Megadrive / Genesis console and this wonderful marketing campaign. As a Sega evangelist, you'll have to convince players to leave their NES console and avoid the SNES because "Genesis does what Nintendon't". How much market share can you earn thanks to your knowledge of the Megadrive / Genesis games library? (You are about to play an actual game for the Sega Megadrive / Genesis home console. This emulated version may present issues (lag, sound glitch, etc.) compared to the original console.)

3-2-1

3-2-1

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1984

3–2–1 was a popular (and successful) British game show that was made by Yorkshire Television for ITV. It ran for ten years, between 29 July 1978 and 24 December 1988, with former Butlins Redcoat Ted Rogers as the host. It was based on a Spanish gameshow called Un, dos, tres... responda otra vez and was a trio of three shows in one, a quiz, a variety and game show. The show was a huge success, consistently pulling in large ratings. The first series, though intended as a summer filler, attracted up to 16.5 million viewers and subsequent years never failed to peak below 12 million. The show occupied a Saturday early evening slot for most of its run. The final Christmas special (broadcast on 24 December 1988) attracted 12.5 million viewers, so it is (to this day) unclear why an eleventh series wasn't commissioned. Ted Rogers claimed in an April 1996 interview that "The Oxbridge lot got control of TV and they didn't really want it. It was too downmarket for them. We were still getting 12 million viewers when they took it off after ten years. These days if a show gets nine million everyone does a lap of honour.".

3-K Trivia

MS-DOS - Released - August 28, 1984

3-K Trivia is a trivia game for up to six players. Each question round begins with a slot machine which randomly chooses three of the question categories (science, history, geography, nature, sports, show business and two mixed topics). Then the player (each participant is quizzed separately) chooses the category (provided that different ones appeared) and has to answer a trivia question by typing in the answer. Answering correctly awards a certain amount of points and the goal is to collect more than the other players. The specific amount is influenced by a number of factors, most importantly the spinning at the beginning of the round: when a category appears more than once, it is worth more points. There are also Joker cards which increase the stake. Points are deducted for using the help function (revealing a letter) or small differences (e.g. due to a typo) to the correct answer. When the result is tied after the last question was asked, the game continues one question at a time until one player wins. Options include setting the number of questions each player is asked (up to 25) and a 15 second time limit for answering. The game allows to add more questions.

NEC PC-9801 - Released - July 19, 1991

A nameless otaku (which roughly corresponds to the English geek, albeit with a focused "nerdiness" in all things anime) encounters an aggressively-looking Santa Claus, who offers to test his knowledge; if he succeeds, he can have his way with a few magically summoned beautiful girls... Santa-kun is a quiz simulation. Santa asks a question, and the player must choose the correct answer among the three available ones. The game consists of several "matches"; in the beginning of each, a fully dressed young girl is introduced. A match consists of three rounds (25 questions all together); after each round, the girl removes part of her clothing. Upon successful completion of a match, the girl is shown fully naked. The questions revolve (with a few exceptions) around video games and computer technology.

NEC TurboGrafx-CD - Released - June 19, 1992

Adventure Quiz is a compilation of two games previously released on the arcades, Capcom World and Hatena? no Daiboken. Both games play very similarly: the player has to roll dice in order to navigate his/her alter ego on a board with medieval/fantasy backgrounds. Depending on the result, the character advances a certain amount of squares, which lead to various quiz challenges. The player has to answer a series of questions within a time limit, choosing the right answer among the several (usually four) available ones. Two-player gameplay is also possible. Upon reaching the final square of a "world", the player has to face a "boss enemy" (usually a character from popular games by Capcom, such as Side Arms, Forgotten Worlds, etc.). The boss offers the player a choice of several available topics for the decisive quiz. "Defeating" the boss leads the player into a new worlds with its own structure, etc. The themes of the questions are varied, ranging from history and geography to Japanese popular culture and very specific themes (such as bicycles). Hatena? no Daiboken is a follow-up to Capcom World, offering a few enhancements: multiple paths through some worlds, special squares that lead to new challenges (such as a quiz with only three possible answers), etc.

Acorn Electron - Released - 1984

Answer Back Junior Quiz is a single player quiz program. This is the basic program and it allows the player to create, save and play quizzes. Once a question bank has been created it can be saved. When playing the quiz the player has the option of playing either a Yes/No quiz, a multiple choice quiz, a 'complete the answer' quiz or a selection of all three. The player can also select the number of questions in the quiz, whether the questions are sequential or random and whether they are timed or not. If the player answers a question correctly they are treated to a small animation showing a princess being rescued by a dragon. The main purpose behind this game however was not to play self-made quizzes, it was a vehicle by which add-on packs containing five hundred questions were sold. Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader

Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader

Nintendo 3DS - Released - September 8, 2015

Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? is based off the Fox TV game show of the same name and features the voice and CGI likeness of its host, Jeff Foxworthy. The set-up is the same as the shows, where there are 10 questions ranging from $1,000 to $1,000,000 and consists of grade school subjects such as grammar, animal science, astronomy, among many other subjects. The game board is divided with grades one through five listed with two questions a piece, which is randomized after each game. The player can also choose which grade and subject to answer at any time. At the beginning of the game they choose one from five different classmates (Amanda, Cynthia, Joseph, Edward, and Logan), each with their own subject specialties and changes a student after two questions. They can use these classmates to either "copy" (which lets the player use the answer of their classmate) and "peek" (which lets the player take a look at their classmates answer and help them decide). There is also a "save" cheat that saves the player in case both they and their classmate both get a question wrong. Also, a player can "drop out" at anytime and end the game with the money they have won. The first nine questions are given to the player in the form of multiple choice, however the final $1,000,000 question requires the player to manual spell out the answer. Additionally, a player can not use a "cheat" or "drop out", once they choose to answer the question, they must answer it. While the game's rules are identical to those of the TV show, one main difference is that their is no time limit, giving the player an ample opportunity to "cheat" in their own way.

Beer Trivia

MS-DOS - Released - November 15, 1993

Beer Trivia tries something that very few games (only Rockstar and BarneySplat come to mind) attempt: to simulate inebriation in textmode. It plays as a multiple-choice trivia game, with lurid questions such as adults of drinking age might exchange at a local tavern, with one difference: if you get a question wrong, you have to "take a drink". Who can get drunk on virtual booze, you ask? As the character gets progressively more and more smashed, more and more of the text characters are replaced by random garble (the game's billed "intoxication simulation!"), making it more difficult to interpret questions and identify even known answers. The more drinks your player consumes, the greater the chance they will pass out, getting turfed from the game until the following day. One further exceptional racy element is the player's ability to have the correct answer to a failed question displayed in exchange for the virtual removal of a virtual garment -- up to three per day, beyond which even the computer doesn't want to contemplate. For registered users (only $10!), six bonus packs of additional questions on various subjects were available to bolster the 75 questions that came with the shareware installment.

Clicking on the image or on its icon beneath it can bring up more characters to look at, and sometimes clicking on a part of the image brings up a description of that part. At various times a quiz screen will appear and you'll have to answer a question to proceed. As you progress, the amulet on the right will gradually build up and selecting this takes you to another screen with bonus pictures.
