"Kennedy Approach..."

"Kennedy Approach..."

Commodore 64 - Released - January 1, 1985

The player assumes the role of a controller in a Terminal Radar Approach Control, giving instructions to aircraft so that they can safely land, as well as take off and enter their correct flight corridors. The purpose of the game is to manage the flights that are presented to the player without the flights being delayed or exiting/landing in the wrong location. The aircraft either come flying in on the screen and have preset exit or landing points or show up as wanting to take off with an exit point. It is the player's job to determine the route each aircraft flies and when they may land or take off. The aircraft cannot be too close to each other, so the player needs to make sure that they are passing each other on different flight levels or with sufficient distance (three grid dots north/south or east/west) between them. When an aircraft is in danger of crashing or is exiting at the wrong location or altitude, the aircraft will inform the air traffic controller. Aircraft do not change course/altitude unless the player tells them to. Incoming aircraft not given clearance to land, however, will go into a holding pattern and wait until given clearance. When necessary, the player can also give holding instructions to aircraft, as long as their course takes them over a VOR tower which is used as the holding fix. To start with, there are few flights at the same time, but at higher GS levels, there are many flights that need management at the same time. Also storms which the aircraft can not pass through show up and some aircraft have very little fuel and have to land fast or they will crash.

10 Computer Hits

10 Computer Hits

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1985

10 Computer Hits is the first in what would prove to be a lucrative series of compilations for Beau Jolly. Although published on all of the main 8-bit formats of the time, the content of the compilations varied from machine to machine by virtue of Beau Jolly's policy of picking up cheap licences from publishers who generally didn't have enough material (or funds) of their own to publish a compilation of their own. The compilation was also notable for being one of the first to be advertised on British televison. Games included were: * Chuckie Egg (A 'n' F Software) * Pinball Wizard (CP Software) * Killer Gorilla (Micropower) * Heroes of Karn (Interceptor Software) * Special Operations (M.C. Lothlorien) * Flight Path 737 (Anirog Software) * Ghouls (Micropower) * Defend or Die (Alligata Software) * The Covenant (Personal Software Services) * Jack and the Beanstalk (Thor) While most of these were older titles when the compilation was released, The Covenant was still viewed as fairly new (having been released only two months earlier).

You are part of the 8th Air Force 306th Bomber Group and you must try to survive 50 missions (in real life the average lifespan of a crew member was 18.33 missions) in your B-17 (named the Impatient Virgin) over France and Germany. As pilot you will have full control of your bomber and 10 crew members, each of which plays a different role in your mission. After each mission providing you have survived you will be evaluated and awarded points based on mission difficulty, bombing accuracy and aircraft destroyed. The more points you receive the closer you get to being promoted. You start off as a Lieutenant and can make it all the way to Brigadier general. Also depending on how many points you earn in a mission you can receive a medal or if you are wounded a Purple Heart. Each mission lasts approximately 10 minutes. The '50 Mission Crush' was the name given to the crushed service cap of the battle hardened veterans who flew the B-17 during WWII. It was a mark of distinction and honor.

Acorn Atom - Released - 1981

Passengers and crew of a 747 Jumbo Jet are in your hands on a flight to land at England's busiest airport Heathrow. The huge aircraft is solely in your command as you fly in the pilot's hot seat through the suburbs of London. When you have located the position of two Heathrow runways you must start the descent and safely land the aircraft. Just how good a pilot you are will be revealed once you have completed the landing as you receive points for airmanship. Bug Byte's 747 Flight was actually written by a Jumbo Jet pilot for the Liverpool software supplier, so it earns top marks for its realism. On the screen you are confronted with various figures representing altitude, the state of the undercarriage, a compass, the rate of climb in feet per second, the speed of the aircraft in knots and the angle of the flaps in degrees, to name but a few. To help you on your flight, a map of Heathrow's environs has been included with the game. On it are marked the 10 stations (six of which are close to the two runways) and possible flight paths.

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1988

You've parked your car near the entrance of airport terminal. The day looks good. Your flight is in a few hours, so you have time to get ready to take-off... In the game you are a regular pilot of "A 320" airbus, who will be involved suddenly in terrorist action organized by air pirates. The plot is divided in three parts: two point-and-click adventure phases set in airport and on terrorist's island and simplified flight simulator phase between them. During the real-time adventure phase in airport, you should move between locations, interact with people and objects to gain information on radio channels, frequency, number of route, time of take-off, which vary in each seance of gameplay. After sitting in cockpit the game is turned in the flight sim. You should perform take-off, activate the radio, and receive a first radio transmission from pirates, who will inform you on actions you should perform or airbus will be blown up. Finally they direct your airbus with passengers to the pirate's island, where you should land it. During the real-time adventure phase on the island you should find the pirate's house, get inside it, and defeat pirate's mastermind with a gun. The overall gameplay is flown in first-person view, when player should move the cursor on the screen to move to certain location, collect, use or interact with items as well as talk with persons. The persons are real actors originally, but digitized slightly as well as overall environment. The game is flown in real-time and special part of screen shows the current position (parallel in time to yours) of some terrorist, who you can't see until reaching a certain point of the game. The game is played by one person and originally made in French.

A-10C Warthog

A-10C Warthog

Windows - Released - April 22, 2011

DCS: A-10C Warthog is an air combat flight simulator. It lets the simulator pilot fly the A-10C Thunderbolt II aircraft in various combat roles and missions that this aircraft has been designed for. Its main role in the game is to fly missions (with a wingman) that mainly involve attacking ground targets. The simulator provides for all but classified A-10C features of the 'Tank Killer'. While originally a stand-alone successor to DCS: Black Shark, it was re-branded as DLC when the free-to-play game DCS World was launched. The operation theater of this A-10C is within the DCS World, a simulated world in which the A-10C is one of the many modules that connect. DCS plans to develop more modules, some represent ground units. All modules (current plane sim DCS: Black Shark sim DCS: Combined Arms, and future plane sim add-on LockOn: Flaming Cliffs 3) work together to provide a large simulation of ground, naval and air warfare. This simulator can run in offline as well as multiplayer mode. The simulator world is in the northeast corner of the Black Sea, and covers the area of the western Caucasus mountains from Anapa, Russia to Tblisi, Georgia. This world consists of over hundred other AI models, on the ground, in the air, and at sea. The AI takes into account searching for ground and airborne threats and prioritisation, reloading time and battle performance based on battle damage, to name a few AI features. The AI models the following NATO and Russian aircraft, and equipment: A-A weapons A-G weapons Air defense units Armoured vehicles Civilian ground vehicles ECM systems Selection of aircraft Ships This A-10C simulator itself has a very high level of realism, from preflight, startup, mission execution, weapons and aircraft handling. It also has a game mode which is less demanding: the preset for Game mode, and Easy Communication mode. In this game mode it uses a simplified flight model, one-button weapons control systems, an omniscient “radar”, and on-screen symbols/labels to boost situational awareness. To assist the new pilot in depth training missions and the wide selection of single missions help to prepare to the campaign, aircraft and avionics familiarisation. Background info can be looked up with the built-in Encyclopedia. The simulator manual contains almost 700 pages of detailed info about the A-10C, flight operations, tactics, aircraft and vehicles, to name a few. To boost immersion of the sim, the sound system support this. What is heard is what is expected. The 30mm cannon, button presses, switch flipping, the whiny turbofans, are present. Effect of distance and speed of sound where the sound of impact is delayed compared to the view of the impact. Game play and options are as follows: Instant Action (5 scenarios) Fast Mission (fly a randomly create battle) Training Missions Campaigns (3 main ones consisting of various sub missions) Multiplayer Mission Editor (for customisation, scripting, tactics, rules of engagement, and new missions) Campaign creator (to build your own campaign mission set) Encyclopedia (covers all aircraft, vehicles and systems in the sim) Logbook (the flight log)

On the planet surface you now have to find the enemy bases and destroy them while avoiding or shooting more enemy ships. You can set a course to the nearest one and you use fusion bombs to remove them. Once the bases have been destroyed then you return back to the mother ship and plan your next assault.

An elite pilot using the codename Mobius 1 is sent on a number of missions to fight Eruseans and help ISAF to win the war. It allows the player to participate in semi-realistic dog-fighting with a collection of fighter jets, including the F-22 Raptor, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-117 Nighthawk, U-2 Dragon Lady, C-130 Hercules and SR-71 Blackbird. Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War

Sony Playstation 4 - Released - October 25, 2004

Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War is a first person air combat and flight simulator. Like other Ace Combat games, each mission is determined by a level briefing and objectives. There are 32 missions in the main campaign mode, while an additional "arcade" mode puts the player in the role of Mobius One (from Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies) as he faces endless waves of enemy attacks. Regardless of the mode chosen, once in the air the player will have control over speed, direction, altitude, gun cannon, missiles and special weapon of their aircraft. A new feature from previous Ace Combat games, is the concept of Wingmen and being able to issue simple orders to them in the air. This allows the player to better coordinated group attacks as well as giving each wingman a personality of their own. Additionally, the player as squadron leader will be asked to make decisions ("Yes/No") while flying in the air. Between missions, the story is progressed through a series of cutscenes.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - October 23, 2007

Throughout Ace Combat 6, the player must pilot a fighter jet or other aircraft to destroy foes both in the air and on the ground. As an arcade flight game, it simplifies flight controls and gives the player a large amount of bullets, missiles and other weapons, putting them up against a very large amount of enemy forces. In addition to missiles and a vulcan cannon, the player can equip special weapons such as heat-seeking missiles, bombs, rocket launchers, and others. The player can lock on to a number of foes, and assist different tactical squads by switching between their respective HUD readouts. The game includes 4 default multiplayer modes: Battle Royale, Siege Battle, Team Battle, and Co-Op Battle. In Battle Royale, the basic Deathmatch game mode, up to sixteen players shoot each other down to earn the highest points at the time limit. In Team Battle, a basic Team Deathmatch game is created. Points are awarded based on the type of aircraft destroyed. A unique type of multiplayer game, Siege Battle is played with two teams, Attacking and Defending. The Attacking team attempts to destroy the target (usually heavily defended by flak) within the time limit. The Defending team tries to halt their attack. The co-op battle mode consists of two single-player missions without AI that can be played with up to three other players.

Ace Combat Infinity

Sony Playstation 3 - Released - May 20, 2014

Ace Combat Infinity is set in an alternate timeline, in which Earth was ravaged by the "Ulysses Disaster". In 1994, a fictional asteroid collides with one of Jupiter's moons, 5254 Ulysses. This event sends about 10,000 meteors heading for Earth, all expected to impact the planet in five years' time. Faced with the prospect of extinction, the world's major superpowers build "Stonehenge", a network of anti-air railguns across the planet.[4] The meteor storm finally hits Earth in July 1999. While Stonehenge destroys enough of the inbound meteors to prevent human extinction, the remaining meteors still ravaged about 20% of the Earth's surface, destabilizing the economy and collapsing the world order.[4][5][6] The disaster hits Europe and Asia especially hard, forcing the nations to reorganize and create automated refugee zones. Twenty years later, the United Nations Forces finds itself fighting against terrorist organizations around the world. To better combat the terrorist threat, the UN hires Arrows Air Defense and Security, a private military company specializing in aerial warfare.[4] The player character and silent protagonist, callsign "Reaper", is a rookie pilot employed by Arrows. Arrows assigns Reaper to the "Bone Arrow" squadron, which includes long-time pilot "Omega" and ace veteran "Viper". Part-way through the story, Bone Arrow becomes rivals with Ridgeback Squadron, a squadron of elite UNF pilots headed by leader "Slash" and his second-in-command, "Edge". The main antagonist forces are the Sons of Troia, a group of armed terrorists who later create an independent "Federation of USEA" or USEA Federation. Reaper's actions against the Sons of Troia and USEA soon make him a recognized mercenary ace pilot.[4] Elements in the game, such as the Ulysses disaster, the Stonehenge superweapon and the rise of the USEA enemy faction (a new multinational military federation (the "United States of EurAsia"), rather than a fictional continent), are direct references to Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies, but played on Earth instead of "Strangereal", the fictional planet setting of previous Ace Combat games.[7] Furthermore, the player character taking the role of a mercenary pilot of a private military company hired by the UN to keep the "post-Ulysses" world stable to regional dispute and terrorism attacks, is similar to the storyline of Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War. Other elements, including fictional aircraft, names of locales and specific mission settings, reference elements of previous games in the franchise.

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception

Sony PSP - Released - October 24, 2006

Skies of Deception is the first game in the action flight series to appear on the PSP. The player commands the Gryphus Squadron, one of the last to remain for Aurelia with its single airbase, a nation on the southern edge of the Osean Continent. In 2020, Aurelia is attacked by the neighboring country of Leasath, lead by Diego Gaspar Navarro. They invaded because Aurelia was supposedly involved with aiding their enemies in the civil war. There's a variety of crafts with different paint schemes to choose from and many battle missions to attend. In the campaign mode (as usual with different paths to complete it), players can unlock parts to tune their planes. Money is earned by destroying enemies and completing objectives. There are 17 missions in total, but the quickest route in the campaign mode can be done in 10. There is a new multiplayer mode: now up to 4 players can take up one mission in a cooperative (2 players against 2 AI-controlled fighters) or the versus mode with different game types such as Dogfight-Survival, Dog Fight-Shoot Out, Base Attack, Air Superiority, Beacon Battle and Escort Mission.

Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion

Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion

Apple iOS - Released - December 3, 2009

Ace Combat Xi: Skies of Incursion, which retains the core combat mechanics of the Ace Combat series, is a combat flight simulation game but it is presented in a more arcade-like format in contrast to other flight-sim games. The player plays the role of the flight lead in Falco Squadron, of the Aurelian Air Force. Ace Combat Xi does not have multiplayer capability. The player moves the plane by tilting the iPhone upwards or downwards to maneuver to aircraft to climb upwards or dive downwards. Players can also tilt the iPhone sideways to turn the aircraft. Combat is done using the touchscreen where players can touch on the various weapon icons present on the screen to fire the machine gun or missiles armed on the plane, players can also target enemies by touching on the target icon on the screen. Players can also control the speed of the aircraft by tapping on the throttle or brake button on the screen. Throttling temporarily boosts the aircraft speed and will slowly decrease in speed once the effect has worn off, braking will slow down the aircraft though braking too much may result in the plane stalling and losing power. The camera can also be toggled between using a chase camera or a usual HUD view during gameplay

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - March 23, 2006

The main game mode is the story mode, in which the player takes control of an Ustio mercenary pilot, call-sign "Demon Lord", taking part of the said war, advancing missions and advancing in the story while doing it. The missions can be anything done airborne, and there'll be escort, assault and defence missions amongst others. Like in the previous games, the game isn't about simulation, but fast paced aerial combat in highly powered aircraft. More like Top Gun, and less like real world.

Ace Combat: Joint Assault

Ace Combat: Joint Assault

Sony PSP - Released - August 26, 2010

Ace Combat: Joint Assault leaves the fictional worlds of previous Ace Combat installments and enters the real world. The missions take place over London, Tokyo and San Francisco, but still feature fictional elements like huge flying fortresses. The player takes the role of a young pilot who joins the private military force Martinez Security and soon has to fight the Valahia, some sort of bandits which threaten whole cities - but of course the plot soon becomes more complicated. The gameplay is mostly identical to the PSP predecessor Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception. The player controls combat airplanes (either in third-person or from a cockpit view) and fights other airplanes (or other big flying enemies) while dodging their missiles. After finishing missions, which mostly consist of killing a certain number of enemies or boss fights, the player receives money which is reinvested into unlocking more airplanes or upgrades. These aircraft are based (and licensed from) real-life models and have certain advantages and disadvantages, e.g. some are more suitable against flying enemies while bombers are effective against ground targets. The mission tree is branching and the player has to choose between multiple missions at times. The only major new features are the "enhanced combat view" (because modern air combat is usually fought over long distances, the game zooms in to give a nearer visual look at the enemies) and the co-op mode which allows to play the whole campaign with other players. Then the game takes advantage of the branching missions, meaning that the (up to four) players are divided into two teams. The other multiplayer modes are identical to Skies of Deception, except that they allow eight instead of four players to participate.
