.hack//frägment

.hack//frägment

Sony Playstation 2 - Released - November 23, 2005

.hack//frägment is a multiplayer online game based on the fictional MMORPG, The World. It was released only in Japan on November 23, 2005 and online service ended on January 18, 2007, after being extended two months because of its popularity. Famitsu Weekly gave .hack//frägment a cumulative score of 29 out of 40 over four reviews, much like its reviews of the main series. Designer Hiroshi Matsuyama described the game as a way to see how players would react to online play. The game uses the same game engine as the .hack video game series and thus, its gameplay is identical, with the exception of online mode. Players explore areas and fight monsters in real time. A major difference is that during online play, the action does not pause when the menu is opened. Players may still use the skill "Data Drain" to weaken monsters and collect rare items. The user interface and control scheme are otherwise unchanged. Players may create their characters based on a number of preset body shapes and color schemes and may choose a class (such as Wavemaster or Twin Blade) and character name. In online mode, players may enter a lobby and search for a maximum of two other players to join them on an adventure. The game includes an expanded communication interface that allows players to chat, send e-mail, post to an in-game Bulletin Board System, and receive server news updates. It is possible to establish ad-hoc chat rooms separate from the public-access ones. Guilds are permanent, exclusive chat rooms for members. In offline mode, players may level up, obtain items, and learn new skills as one of their online mode characters without the need for an Internet connection. Players may invite characters from the .hack games, .hack//Sign, and .hack//Legend of the Twilight into their party. The "story mode" of .hack//frägment is identical to that of the .hack games, with the player's created character replacing Kite. While offline, players may use a PC utility called "HackServer" to create areas and dungeons and release them online. The creators of the most popular areas are given the ability to add strong monsters for players to defeat.

Age of Empires Online

Age of Empires Online

Windows - Released - August 16, 2011

Age of Empires Online takes the classic Age of Empires real-time strategy gameplay, and places it into a quest-based online structure. Similar to the previous games in the series, most missions ask you to build up an economy, then an army, then crush all those who oppose you, with occasional more unusual missions. The differences come between missions; your capital city allows you to equip your soldiers, unlock technologies, craft items, and so on. Items, either found in missions, bought, or crafted, give per-unit-type benefits. For example, a copper sword might give a 3% damage bonus to Hoplites. Technologies are unlocked using technology points, which are acquired through gaining levels. Only unlocked technologies can be researched in a mission. Both story missions and side missions are available, with some missions repeatable to gain more XP, items, and gold.

Aion

Aion

Windows - Released - November 25, 2009

In the beginning, Aion benevolently watched over his world Atreia. He created the humans, and the Balaur to safeguard and watch over them. Eventually, the Balaur became obsessed with power and subjugation. Five of the Balaur rose to a height of strength above the rest, and became known as the five Dragon Lords. When Aion refused to grant them the power they desired, the power to rival his own, they revolted and declared war on the god that created them. Aion's hand was forced, and he created the twelve Empyrean Lords, beings of divinity and power to protect the Tower of Eternity. Some humans "ascended" to become Daeva and, like the Empyrean Lords, had wings and the ability to fight the Balaur. With time, enough Daevas rose to form an army. The Empyrean Lords would lead the Daeva into battle and fight ceaselessly. Eventually an attempt at peace with the Balaur was made. The five Drakan Lords were invited inside the barrier for peace talks, but before the peace-talks could begin, one of the Drakan Lords was nearly assassinated by an unknown assailant. In the fighting that followed, the Tower of Eternity was destroyed, resulting in the cataclysm that broke Atreia in half. Five Empyrean Lords, most of whom opposed the peace treaty, came to power in the dark part of the world, "Asmodae," and became known as the Shedim Lords. Another five who had mostly desired peace became the Seraphim Lords and ruled over the lower half of Atreia, "Elysea." Two of the Empyrean Lords sacrificed themselves to keep Atreia from crumbling entirely. Those that lived in the light part of the world, the Elyos, saw little change. These followers of the Seraphim Lords created the city of Sanctum. The inhabitants of the upper part, the Asmodians, saw many changes. Their hands became claw-like, their feet became talons. The darkness made their complexion cool, and their eyes grew red adapting to the absence of light. They live in the city of Pandaemonium under the rule of the Shedim Lords.

AirMech Strike

AirMech Strike

Windows - Released - November 8, 2012

AirMech is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Carbon Games for Microsoft Windows, with Android and VR version in the works. Originally released onto Steam's early access program in November 2012, the game was fully released in March 2018 under the name AirMech Strike, and additionally released a version on the Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 under the name AirMech Arena. Inspired by Technosoft's popular Herzog Zwei for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, AirMech puts the player in similar perspective of a giant transforming robot that can fly above the battle as well as land on the ground to aid units. The game revolves around the player controlling their AirMech directly and then building units to assist in achieving whatever the goal of the game mode is. The player can build units and pick them up and can place them down on the battlefield to take part in the battle. The main objective of the game is to destroy the other team's fortress and/or keep the player's fortress running. The fortress spawns creeps which are infantry units that can capture outposts. Outposts are buildings that can heal AirMechs and units if they are picked up. Players can unlock units, pilots and AirMechs with ingame currency called kudos, which are earned after each match is completed. Players also gain persistent XP on completion of matches. The player can unlock various units as their level increases. Unit types include: infantry, tanks, some light cars, stationary units (for defense or economy), healing units, and traps. Alternatively, players can purchase diamonds which can unlock units and cosmetics. Any pilot/unit/item/airmech/part that affects gameplay can be bought with kudos. Players have one resource to manage, which is known as credits. Credits are generated by the fortress and every outpost the player owns. Different units require a certain amount of credits to be built. Players can also build special units called money makers to generate more credits. The player has an upkeep cap of around 30, although some units take up more of these slots than others. This number can be increased by capturing outposts as well as by building units known as generators. A player can choose between nine different AirMechs and various pilots, items, and parts. Each AirMech has different abilities and stats. Pilots, items and parts provide a mixture of provide large stat boosts to AirMechs and units at the cost of significant downsides. Some pilots also affect credit generation and the unit cap. Items provide tiny stat boosts that do not affect gameplay significantly. Parts are equipped on airmechs and provide minor stat boosts with a downside, with more parts being able to be equipped the more the player has used the airmech. AirMech features four core game modes: solo (including challenges), co-op, player versus player (PvP), and survival. A variety of custom game modes may also be selected including capture the flag (CTF) and ZobaMech which precludes unit production and inflicts damage while flying.

Aliens Online

Aliens Online

Windows - Released - April 16, 1998

Aliens Online was a massively multiplayer first person shooter released on the GameStorm subscription service. Players could choose to wield a pulse rifle as a member of the Colonial Marines, or stick to the shadows as one of H. R. Giger's iconic Aliens. Gameplay pit the two species against each other in a standard team deathmatch with limited respawns. Players could fight in one of five initial maps, with multiple games running simultaneously and selected from an in-game chat area and browser. Maps ranged from a loose reproduction of the colony from Aliens, to a derelict spacecraft with an Alien hive in the lower levels. Every map had cramped air ducts or sewer pipes that the Aliens could speedily, and usually securely, make use of - with hatches that allowed the player to drop onto unsuspecting marines and rend them with claw and tail attacks. Marines carried a selection of long-range firepower based on the weapons in the film. A lone marine only had access to a pulse rifle, pistol, shotgun, and motion tracker (deployed like a weapon, and not part of the HUD). Up to four marines could also band together in a fireteam, unlocking heavy weapons like the flamethrower and the auto-tracking SmartGun. Members of a fireteam could also open minature "helmet cam" windows for each of their teammates, and see a feed of what that player was seeing. Kills and victories resulted in experience points, which were permanently tracked by character. XP milestones granted stat-increasing ranks to marines, making veteran soldiers tougher and deadlier. A similar system also existed on the Alien side, with XP points granting the ability for one player per open game to play as the Queen - a bigger and tougher Alien requiring teamwork to take down.

Allods Online

Allods Online

Windows - Released - February 10, 2010

Allods Online has many traditional MMORPG elements such as quests, NPCs, and dungeons. It also has an element that is fairly unique - the ability for players to build ships and sail around in a vast expanse of magical space called "the Astral". In the Astral, players can fight each other in ship-to-ship combat as well as discover new zones like the Goblin Republic that cannot be reached any other way. Furthermore, ships have individual crew stations which can be operated by multiple players on the same ship together. Another way for players to test their skills is via PvP on maps such as the Holy Land. The Holy Land tends to be extremely crowded due to its position as one of the primary locations of the war between the two factions - the Empire and the League. Open PvP, utilizing a flagging system found in many traditional MMORPGs, is also available in any area of the game, and gives special bonuses to players who quest and hunt while their Flag of War is raised. There are also special areas where players can engage in large-scale PvP activities to earn unique rewards. The game also provides a developed guild system that encourages players to work together to improve their guild ranking and allow them to participate in more content, such as the Astral Confrontation, as well as design custom regalia to look unique in the game and benefit special abilities.

Cities XL

Cities XL

Windows - October 8, 2009

Cities XL a city builder very similar to SimCity but with many more features and things the player has to pay attention to. It largely builds on the concept of the earlier City Life series by the same development studio. Before building a city from scratch the player has to create an avatar that will appear both online on the website in the profile as well as in the game itself. But as opposed to Tropico 3 for instance, the avatar is just for chatting through text and emotes with other players visiting the city. His presence in the city will not influence anything. Once an avatar has been created the player has to decide where he wants to begin building his city. While a single-player mode is available and offers more than a dozen different maps to play around on, the core of the game is the subscription-based planet mode. There the players have whole planets at their disposal with hundreds of slots to build a city on with varying difficulty levels. Building a city in the planet mode and connecting it to the outside world also gives the player access to an extensive marketplace, allowing for trade with other players and the omnipresent and slightly evil OmniCorp. To do so, tokens are created when the player's city has a surplus of certain resources and once a contract has been signed by both parties, the trade will last for five days or until there is no more surplus available. In order to get a surplus, the player of course needs to build up his city first. He has several means to do so. He can either build each house and each road himself or just build a long main street and build designated blocks (even with diagonal and curved streets) connected to it. The player has to build homes, workplaces, shopping options and recreation facilities for four types of inhabitants and five types of industries ranging from agriculture which needs unqualified workers to high-tech industry that relies both on qualified workers and executives to function. In addition infrastructure like water, electricity, a railroad network, expressways and such need to be build up by the player, as well as public buildings like schools or police headquarters are needed to won a flourishing city. All this is accommodated by a vast assortment of menus that gives the player easy access to every information he possibly needs, ranging from one click that shows what one type of industry or workers think and need to more in-depth and number-heavy statistics.

City of Heroes: Homecoming

City of Heroes: Homecoming

Windows - Released - April 2, 2019

City of Heroes is home to an entire multiverse of superpowered beings in a stunning, 3D graphical world. Players take on the roles of heroes, villains, vigilantes, and rogues, while both saving and destroying worlds. City of Heroes was known for its groundbreaking level of customization, its highly community-focused features, and its abundant developer-player interaction and feedback. Homecoming: City of Heroes has been in operation since April 2019 with a wide variety of quality-of-life features such as custom XP rates, alignment switching at will, all costume parts available on character creation, all vestiges of the Paragon Store removed, and a new player archetype, Sentinels. Homecoming has five player shards, four testing shards, and the largest community of players today. Homecoming is the unofficial revival of NCSoft's City of Heroes, based on an image of the last source code before the game was shut down, plus seven years of adaptation work. The servers are maintained and GM'd by a volunteer team, supported by donations. While NCSoft has not given explicit permission or license, neither has it shut the Homecoming servers down. Negotiations announced in 2019 to 2020 have so far not yielded any announcement, but the general understanding is that it is permitted to operate so long as donations are accepted for the payment of operating costs only. Other than those donations, accepted monthly outside of the game, no payment is required or accepted from players. As of May 2021, the game remains under continued development by the Homecoming Team and has an active playerbase (1,219 players online the morning of this writing).

Cloud Chamber

Windows - August 7, 2014

Cloud Chamber is marketed as a massively multiplayer story game. It is an investigation game where players need to piece together a story by watching footage in a large database and discussing it with other players. The footage is presented as parts of a science documentary commissioned by The Petersen Institute. It is a space research institute involved with space physics, particle physics, astrophysics and biophysics. The focus of the documentary is on Kathleen Petersen, Deputy Director of Research and Physicist, and the daughter of the company boss Gustav Petersen. The title refers to the cloud chamber, an experimental vault designed to catch subatomic particles. The footage, in full motion video, starts off as a regular documentary with Kathleen, film maker Tom, employee Max and the boss Gustav as the main characters. It also contains very different fragments, such as an experiment on a roof to trap a mysterious space signal, Kathleen motivations for the project after her mother Ingrid's strange death, the notes and letters of her mother, the work of Gustav, and video diaries of the various characters. There are also audio transcripts, pictures, sketches and various papers and documents. The various types of media are not shown in a chronological order. They are organized in a large 3D database, split up in ten chapters with multiple nodes per chapter. Height plays a role as higher nodes contain mode important information than lower ones. The player travels from one node to the next in a virtual 3D world. 'Progress' through the chapter is achieved by watching a piece of footage or examining an item, which opens up one or multiple additional nodes and eventually the next chapter. There is no interactivity or choice in the media, except by determining what to watch next. Players move from node to node, can zoom out, and nodes can be revisited. Video can be set full screen and for pictures it is possible to zoom in to view all the details. There are no puzzles to solve to further the game. Every player sees the same type of content, but the players have to fill in the rest of the content by discussing it. Next to media each node contains a discussion screen where players can post comments, reply, and upvote or downvote explanations. The footage itself does not present a conclusion, this is for the players to examine. There are about 150 fragments and also more than 30 videos from the European Space Agency.

Club Penguin

Club Penguin

Windows - Released - October 24, 2005

Club Penguin is a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) involving a virtual world containing a range of online games and activities, created by New Horizon Interactive (now known as Disney Canada Inc.). Players use cartoon penguin-avatars and play in a winter-set virtual world. After beta-testing, Club Penguin was made available to the general public on October 24, 2005 and has since expanded into a large online community —growing to the extent that by late 2007, it was claimed that Club Penguin had over 30 million user accounts. As of July 2013, Club Penguin has over 200 million registered user accounts. While free memberships are available, revenue is predominantly raised through paid memberships which allow players to access a range of additional features, such as the ability to purchase virtual clothing, furniture, and in-game pets called "puffles" for their penguins through the use of in-game currency. The success of Club Penguin led to New Horizon being purchased by The Walt Disney Company in August 2007 for the sum of 350 million dollars, with an additional 350 million dollars in bonuses should specific targets be met by 2009. The game is specifically designed for children aged 6 to 14, however, users of any age are allowed to play Club Penguin.[5] Thus a major focus of the developers has been on child safety,[6] with a number of features introduced to the game to facilitate this — including offering an "Ultimate Safe Chat" mode, whereby users select their comments from a menu; filtering that prevents swearing and the revelation of personal information;[6] and moderators who patrol the game.[7] The game has been criticized for teaching consumerism[8] and allowing players to "cheat".[9]

Not only is this an improved version, but it will also be more widely available to players around the world. CosmicBreak Universal features PvP battles of up to 30 vs. 30 players at one time. Familiar WASD controls and fast-paced Arena action makes CosmicBreak Universal quick and easy to get into for any gamer. Every robot has different abilities, and many feature special weapons and collectable rare parts. Using the powerful robot assembly system, you'll be able to build unique robots that are yours and yours alone. Choose from one of 3 Unions, and join forces with other heroes to lead your Union to victory! I'm a CosmicBreak vet; what's different about CosmicBreak Universal? Numerous improvements have been made towards overall game balance and usability, including the simplification of status ailments, and individual adjustments to weapons and more. We believe a greater number of players will be able to enjoy the game this way. For example, the Power stat on projectile weapons with a lengthy charge time will now be dramatically increased, and projectile speed across all weapons will be adjusted to prevent extreme outliers. We have also made refinements to the character models for several humanoids that debuted near the release of CosmicBreak. In addition, numerous changes have been made to increase the ease of access to desired robots, humanoids, and useful items.

Survivors gradually began to change — after fifteen years of transformation, the changes became visible. The most noticeable metamorphosis occurred in the eyes of the affected — some began to glow, while others resembled black holes. To hide their unnatural looks and conceal the mutation, people started wearing padded clothing and sunglasses. Twenty years have passed after ‘Crossout’. Humans still remember their life before the disaster. As always, there are groups trying to recover the old world, while others enjoy the chaos and destruction.
