3D Deathchase

Dragon 32/64 - Homebrew - 2009

3D Deathchase is a conversion of the highly rated ZX Spectrum 16K game by Mervyn J. Estcourt. This version was written by James McKay and was based upon the disassembled Z80 source made by Richard Wilson for his Amstrad CPC conversion. Like the original, this also fits into 16K (which some Tandy Color Computer models have installed). 3D Deathchase features a chase through a forest on a motorbike, from an over-the-shoulder perspective. The aim is to shoot two other motorbikes and a bonus item (a helicopter or a tank) while dodging the trees. There are 8 sectors to beat, split into forest and arctic sections (the original had day and night sections, but the Dragon palette did not suit that, a bit of artistic licence was used).

A scanner is provided to give you a view of which streets the Seiddab lurk on, allowing you to steer left and right to reach them, as well as adjusting your sights to take them down. Gameplay is arcade-oriented, with few cockpit gauges and displays to keep in mind. The three cockpit instruments are your radar, speed readout and fuel meter. You run out of fuel when you fire your phasors and when you are hit by enemy fire. You can replenish your fuel by docking with the fuel station which comes into view from time to time. Once all Seiddab spacecraft in the area are destroyed, you warp into the next zone.

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1987

These can be explored freely but sometimes you need to have special objects to proceed, e.g. a candle in dark rooms. The dangers consist mostly of sharp objects which can cause your ball to burst. Additionally you are on a timer because your balloon loses air constantly. Android Attack

Android Attack

Dragon 32/64 - Released

Android Attack is a 32K update of the Berzerk variant Robot Battle for 16K Tandy Colour systems. The extra memory is used to add in another feature of the original arcade game, speech, which is featured in its Microdeal title, Talking Android Attack. Like in Berzerk, you are a lone humanoid in a large complex with lots of maze-like rooms. Your objective is to survive, and earn points by exterminating all the hostile robots that inhabit the complex. Shooting a robot (before it shoots you) turns it into a heap of deadly scrap, which will reanimate after a short while, though not into the android it once was, but into a ghost. The ghosts can pass through walls and try to fulfill the mission of their former life. This is a slight deviation from the original Berzerk, where the ghost was a separate character named "Evil Otto". Another difference is that in this version, you can jump and duck to avoid robot bullets. Another peril in the game is the walls, which are electrified. By sacrificing an energy unit, of which you need at least three, you can open up a hole in the wall to pass through. On each screen there is also a crown, which can be picked up for 100 points. Killing an android gives 50 points, and killing its ghost gives you another 100. By eliminating all enemies and picking up the crown and exiting the room, you are granted a bonus sum calculated from the remaining time (when it reaches zero, you are killed). For every 10000 points, you earn another energy unit. If you leave the room without having killed the enemies, the computer will say in wobbly 6-bit speech, "Coward!".

Aquanaut 471

Aquanaut 471

Dragon 32/64 - Released

Major Istar: Under the Doomed Sea is a text adventure set in the future where in the beginning of the 21st century the human-driven destruction of Earth's surface has driven mankind to build underwater cities. The player assumes the role of Major Camerion J. Istar (Aquanaut 471 in the UK version) a member of the Oceanic Federation tasked with keeping the peace in the underwater world. The game starts aboard a submarine headed towards the scientific research station Trident Dome. While en route you receive a distress call from service droid Huey-14, but it is cut off before it can explain the problem. Your goal is to solve the mystery regarding the SOS transmission and save the research facility. In addition to the normal graphical text adventure you will also face three arcade style event sequences requiring a joystick. The game screen is divided in two parts, with the top showing the environment in colour and the name of the location, and the bottom half the text description. Single stroke keys can be used to move around (N, S, E, W, U, and D) and there are more than 100 hundred locations. The command parser is a standard verb noun type. You can also save your current location to diskette/cassette for restart later. Next to the adventure parts there are three arcade games that need to be completed. Failure for these does not end the game, but transports Aquanaut 471 back to an earlier location to travel back and give it another try. The mini-games involve docking the submarine on to a platform while avoiding objects, and two security games where a platform needs to be reached while avoiding robot guards. The security games are largely identical in design, but in the second one the robots move quicker and have a different movement pattern.

Arcadia

Arcadia

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1984

Arcadia is a space shoot 'em up along the lines of Galaxians and Space Invaders. You have a ship at the bottom of the screen. Enemy ships come at you in waves scrolling across the screen from right to left. There are twelve levels. When the last level has been completed the game cycles to level one again and continues with no increase in difficulty. You get an extra life if you clear 4 waves. They keep on coming and the object is to get a high score. Interesting key mapping on this game: the bottom row of keys moves left & right, but they are mapped alternately so Z, C, B, M and SPACE move you right while CAP SHIFT, X, V, N, and SYMBOL SHIFT move you left. The middle row of keys (A, S, D, etc) power the thrusters while the top row (Q, W, E, etc) fire the dual lasers.

Three decks are used and shuffled together, so it is possible to draw and even hold in any one hand the same card up to three times during a game. This computer version of Baccarat allows up to three players to compete against the Banker. The Bank offers a stake at the beginning of each hand, and Banco is called by the player accepting it, with Player 1 having first refusal. Back Track

Back Track

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1984

The protagonist of this game, who looks like one of those head-on-feet characters which three-year-olds tend to draw, is the subject of a cruel experiment. Level after level, he is locked inside a maze and must get out before his willpower reaches zero. This means that you will have to find all the necessary keys for locking up the exit, and these are spread all over the maze, of which only one room can be seen at a time. Try to find the map, it will facilitate easier navigation, but each time you look at it time will run much faster, giving you a lower score. The maze is filled with certain dangers, in the guise of snakes which will eat you alive if you startle them. Try to avoid their rooms, or cross them quickly when they turn away from your direction. Finding items such as keys, food or maps will keep your willpower up. The game runs in medium resolution in four colours and features a 3D animation top view of your character as well as animated sequences between levels.

Copta Snatch plays much like Konami's Super Cobra, only the helicopter you're controlling actually works a little more like a real helicopter. No more forced scrolling; here you can hover above a target or strafe back and forth above the landscape. Hovering lets you drop bombs, otherwise you fire forwards in the direction you're travelling. The landscape is littered with missile silos and anti-aircraft guns which fire at you at the slightest chance. You also have to keep an eye on your fuel level – when you're running out, you must find a refueling pad to land on. These pads also serve as your starting points when you've died. Copta Snatch uses a quite uncommon "semigraphics" mode to great effect, similar to the Tandy title Protector II.

The portals move from left to right on the station moving around the station and you have to fire at them to open them sitting at the cannon. Once you have opened some portals you have to fly to one and pull a crew member out who will float around the screen and once you grab them, then you take them to an open hatch on the bottom left of the screen. As you shoot and fly there are Rallom Fighters who move around the screen and try to bomb or touch you. You are immune while firing the cannon but will lose one of three lives if you are hit while flying. As the portals open then some Alien Warriors will appear and try to grab a crew member back if they are outside the station and will also try to kill you. You can kill them with your pistol but ammo is limited and you lose a life if you are hit by these or they take a crew member back to the station. A level is complete when a timer reaches zero and you receive bonus points for any crew member rescued and your ammo level is full again.

Cosmic Invaders

Cosmic Invaders

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1982

The Dragon Data version of the classic Space Invaders game. You control your ship at the bottom of the screen and battle the invading aliens marching across the screen. You can move sideways and fire at the invaders. There are three defenses that you can hide behind, but they will quickly get shot to pieces by the invaders, or maybe your own firing. From time to time, an UFO will fly across the top of the screen. Shoot it for extra points. An extra feature compared to the "classics" is the shield and the hyperspace. You can control the shield using and activate hyperspace by using a second joystick. The shield is a small line positioned just above your defenses. You can shoot through the shield, but the invaders cannot.

Cosmic Zap

Cosmic Zap

Dragon 32/64 - Released

Color Zap is a variant of the arcade game Space Zap. It is a shoot em 'up where the player has to protect a stargate that is located in the centre of the screen. The stargate is stationary so the controls are limited to aiming and shooting at the aliens that appear from the four sides of the screen. When the alien ships appear they launch photon torpedoes that the player has to shoot down before they reach the stargate. The stargate is equipped with three shields and one is lost at every hit. At every 10,000 points an extra shield is awarded and the skill level increases by two. After a wave of attacks a death satellite will start orbiting the stargate and the player has to shoot it down before it attacks. Firing the gun will heat it up which might lead to a meltdown.

Cruising on Broadway

Cruising on Broadway

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1983

Cruising is one of the simplest computer games possible, and one which probably has been independently invented more than one time. The concept is similar to games such as Cuthbert Goes Walkabout, in that your goal is to colour all lines on the screen while avoiding the nasties that might get in your way. Unlike the aforementioned game, though, Cruising doesn't simply divide the screen into a grid. Instead, the lines make more intricate patterns, more so for each "grid" that you clear. Another feature is that you can make a cut in the grid so that the "chaser" can't follow you that way. Just make sure not to cut off your own escape route!

Cuthbert Goes Digging

Cuthbert Goes Digging

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1983

Cuthbert Goes Digging is a 1983 computer game for the Dragon 32 home computer. Written by Steve Bak at Microdeal, the game features the hero Cuthbert, who also appears in Cuthbert Goes Walkabout and Cuthbert in the Mines. In the game, the player guides Cuthbert through levels of girders, avoiding 'moronians' fatal to the touch. The gameplay is basically that of Space Panic: Cuthbert kills moronians by digging holes and causing them to fall down. On later levels, different coloured moronians are harder to kill and must be knocked through two platforms. Cuthbert also battles a time limit on each level, represented by an amount of oxygen remaining. Cuthbert's ability to dig holes can also be used to quickly drop to a lower platform without the use of a ladder. The game is an example of the trap-em-up genre, which also includes games like Heiankyo Alien, Lode Runner, and Boomer's Adventure in ASMIK World.

Viewed from your cockpit, you fly the LIAR spacecraft around the galaxy, with the hope of achieving liberation, by destroying all the Evil Lord's main bases. You'll have to fly accurately through hyperspace tunnels, and keep moving so as to avoid enemy fire, ideally destroying enemy spaceports as well as planetary bases. There are plenty of energy dumps along the way, which you'll need to collect in order to be able to reach all 256 sectors. The game is largely customizable, with almost all controls redefinable, and the speed and power of the enemy variable.

Devil Assault

Devil Assault

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1983

A classic space shooter by Ken Kalish released by Microdeal. Fast paced action, intense sound and some original twists to an old theme characterize this game. The game consists of four different levels. When all levels are completed, it starts at the first level again. Level 1 is the Bombing Wave with space birds flying back and forth trying to bomb your ship at the bottom of the screen. Level 2 is a second Bombing Wave, somewhat more difficult than the first since the birds are located closer to your ship. Level 3 is the Robot Assault. Now the action becomes more challenging. Robots descend from the top of the screen moving in a zig-zag pattern that somehow homes in on your location and at the same time they drop bombs. Level 4 is the Sproing wave. Spring-mounted aliens descend and then bounce back up when they hit the bottom of the screen, resulting in a chaos of aliens flying in all directions and often ending up with them crushing your ship.

Doodle Bug

Doodle Bug

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1983

Doodle Bug is a clone of the arcade game, Lady Bug, itself a close relative of the original Pac-Man. Just like the yellow pill-eater, you guide your sprite around a maze populated by nasties, and can only escape once you've eaten all the pills in the maze. A baddie in the centre of the screen will spawn a new baddie every time the running meter on the score panel has reached zero. The powerup system does not work like Pac-Man, though. No invincibility pills are available, instead, there are a number of letters from the words "special" and "extra" displayed at the top of the screen. When the letters are the same colour as the words they belong to, you begin to spell out those words, granting you either a "special" round or an "extra" life. Additionally, the heart bonuses act as score multipliers for your pills. Without any power pills, your bug is quite vulnerable. Therefore, the environment must be used to its advantage. Many walls in the Doddle Bug maze function like revolving doors which, when passed, will rotate to block the path of a baddie that could otherwise hunt you down.

Dragon Trek (Salamander)

Dragon Trek (Salamander)

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1982

Dragon Trek is a commercial variant of the Star Trek game that originally appeared on mainframe computers. At the start, the difficulty and length of the game (determining the size of the galaxy) can be selected. The player then takes command of the starship Enterprise, trying to eliminate a specific number of Klingon ships using phasers or photon torpedoes. Phasers have three different range settings, the longer the distance, the more energy is consumed for a shot. Movement at impulse speed is done with joystick control, the keyboard is used for command input. To travel to different quadrants faster, the warp engines are used. The scanners of the Enterprise are limited in their capabilities, to get information about the contents of a quadrant, a hyperprobe may be launched if necessary. In addition to friendly starbases which can be docked for faster damage repair and supplies, a quadrant may also contain hazards other than the Klingons, like black holes.

Droids

Droids

Dragon 32/64 - Released - 1983

An Environmental Defence Warden computer or EDWARD for short is on red alert mode after a electrical storm damaged the unmanned warship Arachnid it was controlling. EDWARD will now destroy anything that comes within range, problem is the planet Venus is less than 24 hours away and will be completely destroyed unless EDWARD is shut down. You have been given the mission of moving around the ship, deck by deck to shut each one down but this can only be achieved by destroying a certain amount of droids that move around the ship. The game is viewed from the side with the screen split into two of the various levels for each deck which need exploring for droids by using conveyor belts to move up or down a level. There are doors that take you to new a new level of a deck and transporters take you to a new deck. Each droid is on high alert for any intruders so you must shoot them a number of times while avoiding getting shot or touching the droids. Each time you are hit by a droid or shot then you lose part of an energy gauge and if this runs out then it is game over. Scattered over the ship are computer terminals which you can access and give you various choices in your quest to shutdown each deck. You can see a map of the whole ship and it's decks which leads to a map of the levels of the deck you are on. You can play a little arcade game to give you full energy which has you trying to get a cursor from the top to the bottom of a box though gaps in bars moving left or right. If you touch a bar then you lose a life out of five and if all lives are gone then all terminals on the deck cannot be used to gain energy. Your final option is the shutdown of the actual deck which can only be accessed when you have destroyed enough droids. It is a mastermind type game where you have a five rows of five columns and you have to turn on the circles in the correct pattern. Once you try the first row the computer tells you how many are correct but you lose energy for every wrong guess. Guess the pattern correctly and you can move to the next deck but you can access the game again when you have had five guesses.
