3D Pinball for Windows: Space Cadet

3D Pinball for Windows: Space Cadet

Windows - Released - August 24, 1995

3D Pinball for Windows – Space Cadet is a version of the Space Cadet table bundled with Microsoft Windows. It was originally packaged with Microsoft Plus! 95 and later included in Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, Windows 2000, the 32-bit editions of Windows XP and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. The Windows 98 installation CD has instructions on installing Pinball 3D on this version of Windows which are partly wrong; Microsoft later issued an updated support article.[1] Windows XP was the last client release of Windows to include this game.[2] The look and feel of Full Tilt! Pinball and 3D Pinball are similar, with a few exceptions: The latter contains only the Space Cadet table and only supports 640×480 resolution, while the former supports three different resolutions up to 1024×768. The image on the side is a two-dimensional image as opposed to pre-rendered 3D. The words Maxis and Cinematronics have been changed from the yellow to a dark red, making them harder to see. It sports a splash screen that merely says 3D Pinball and shows a small pinball graphic with faded edges. Music is not enabled by default in 3D Pinball. It has fewer soundtracks that are inspired by the original game. There are only a few minor differences between the gameplay of the two versions. The completion of a mission in the Maxis version results in a replay (actually a ball save rather than a special) being awarded. In addition, hitting a wormhole that has the same color light activates the multi-ball round. This is not the case in 3D Pinball: Completing a mission merely awards bonus points and hitting a wormhole in the above circumstances awards a replay. Another difference is about the three yellow lights above the bumpers (both in the launch ramp and in the upper table zone): In 3D Pinball these are turned back off if the ball passes on them while they are on. This is not the case in the original game, where they just remain activated. Finally, in the Windows version, the fuel lasts longer.

Barney Under the Sea

Barney Under the Sea

Windows - 1998

This is an educational title aimed at pre-school children aged two and upwards. It was compatible with the Barney ActiMate toy via a device known as a PC Pack, for example covering the toy's eyes caused both the toy and the in-game character to play peek-a-boo while squeezing the toy's middle toe caused both Barney's to sing a song related to the current game. The game has keyboard shortcuts that perform the same functions for those who do not have an ActiMate. This game comprises the following six activities: Baby Bop's Mermaid Castle - Here players are shown two scenes each depicting a room in the house. Below these scenes are pictures of everyday items and the player must drag and drop the items into the correct room; BJ's Giant Shell - The player is shown a picture of a person and is asked to click on different parts of the body such as 'arm', 'hand' and 'neck'; Hootin' Annie's Undersea Cave - Here the player is shown a number of animals and has to identify and click on the one specified; Trisha's Treasure Chest - The player is shown a set of animals and must select the odd-one-out; Professor Tinkerputt's Dive Site - The professor gives the player a number and the player must stack that number of shells on top of one another Video Submarine, this contains a collection of short video clips from the television show Barney & Friends. All games can be played in explorer mode where there are no right or wrong answers, this is designed to encourage children to play and experiment. When they do start playing 'seriously' all games have three levels of difficulty which can be quite challenging. For example at level three in Hootin' Annie's Undersea Cave the player is shown a night scene where only the creatures eyes are visible, they must identify the whale, seal, etc by the sound they make when the mouse rolls over them.

Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1997

You're the commander of the allied forces at Operation Market Garden. You can play as either the Germans or the Allies. You play on the battlefield in real-time. The battlefield is bloody and realistic, with scary screams of man down as you watch a man get his head blown off, (the games played in a topdown view,) and the ratta-tat-tat of the German machine-guns. Real machine gun sounds. The Close Combat series have always been realistic because of the AI. Your men will run away if the Germans do a rush or something like that, and they'll be unresponsive if you make them do something stupid (like rushing tanks), and if they start to move into gunfire, under your command of course, they'll go back to the start, or away from the enemy.

Freecell

Freecell

Windows - Released - January 1, 1992

FreeCell is a solitaire card game played using the standard 52-card deck. It is fundamentally different from most solitaire games in that very few deals are unsolvable, and all cards are dealt face-up from the very beginning of the game. Although software implementations vary, most versions label the hands with a number (derived from the seed value used by the random number generator to shuffle the cards). Microsoft has included a FreeCell computer game with every release of the Windows operating system since 1995, greatly contributing to the game's popularity. It is so definitive for many FreeCell players that many other software implementations strive for compatibility with its random number generator in order to replicate its numbered hands.

As a councillor in Council of Peace, the premier peacekeeping force, you will take the advanced fighter and repel the Bion invasion, and eventually destroy the Bion threat once and for all. Fury³ is basically a Windows adaptation of Terminal Velocity where you pilot a super fighter and kill bazillion targets from first person (default) or third-person viewpoints. The action is fast and furious, with plenty of air and ground threats plus structures to shoot. However, the player has to regulate where to shoot because a certain number of points are deducted for each shot greenery. shrub or tree. The fighter sequences are interspersed with a bit of tunnel running (inspired by Descent, no doubt) and a lot of shooting. Shoot the weapon pods to release missiles and other goodies which you can use to supplement your own ship. The game is in full 3D without the need for a 3D video accelerator, though it only supports 320x200 resolution and preferably 256 color only.

Gears of War: Limited Collector's Edition

Gears of War: Limited Collector's Edition

Microsoft Xbox 360 - Released - November 21, 2006

This limited edition of Gears of War is packaged in a collectible metal box along with a book entitled "Destroyed Beauty," which offers a detailed look at the artwork featured in the game's futuristic environments. Also included is a second DVD that explores the making of Gears of War with lead designer Cliff Bleszinski and his development team. Anointed by the games media as Microsoft's first "killer app" for its Xbox 360, Epic Games' Gears of War is a futuristic third-person shooter emphasizing tactical action over run-and-gun battles. Players are thrust in a climactic clash between what's left of humankind and a swarming underground race called the Locust Horde. The main protagonist is Marcus Fenix, a once disgraced soldier looking to redeem himself by leading a ragtag squad against the monstrous threat. Since the alien army vastly outnumbers the team, players must use the post-apocalyptic world to their advantage, such as seeking cover behind dumpsters, pillars, cars, rubble, and other objects. The developer has adapted its award-winning Unreal technology to create interactive environments with a physics-based damage system. Players, for instance, can shoot down structures to forge new routes or opportunities to trap the enemy. Up to three squad mates will accompany Fenix in each mission, with basic commands such as "advance," "hold," or "freelance" available to guide them. A behind-the-shoulder view similar to the one employed in Capcom's Resident Evil 4 is the default perspective in Gears of War. Weapons include an assortment of grenades, pistols, assault rifles, and other long-range blasters, many of which offer a means to engage enemies in melee combat. The Locust Horde is not averse to lunging, rushing, or gnawing at soldiers, so players have the opportunity to perform grisly finishing moves by quickly tapping specific button sequences during close encounters. Cooperative support for two players is offered throughout the campaign, and up to eight can battle each other in team-oriented modes via Xbox Live.

Gears of War: Triple Pack

Gears of War: Triple Pack

Microsoft Xbox 360 - February 15, 2011

Gears of War Triple Pack contains the original Gears of War, Gears of War 2, and the Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection, which includes the "Road to Ruin" campaign and 19 multiplayer maps. Unlike other shooters, Gears of War is all about teamwork in a big way. All game modes, levels and scenarios are designed specifically to encourage co-operative play, whether it be with A.I. partners or human players (with A.I. teammates designed with specific strengths, weaknesses and personalities.) On top of that, voice recognition will be available for players, and obviously voice chat to discuss strategy with your friends. In addition to voice chat, gamers will be able to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player achievements, customize their games, and build and personalize their gamer profiles over Xbox Live. Gears of War 2 continues the story of Marcus Fenix and Delta Squad, locked in an increasingly desperate battle against the nightmarish Locust Horde for the survival of humanity. The game promises to be an epic saga of survival, loss, and retribution. Just as Gears of War set the standard for high-definition visuals, Gears of War 2 raises the bar even further with the amazing technological advances of Unreal Engine 3, delivering a bigger, badder, and more intense experience as the story continues. Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection includes the "Road to Ruin" campaign and 19 multiplayer maps for additional gameplay action.

The player takes the role of various members of the ODST squad in the war-torn city of New Mombasa - most prominently The Rookie, who can be considered the protagonist of the game. A departure from previous games in the Halo series, Halo 3: ODST is more open-ended and features more exploration. The new VISR visor system can provide light amplification and is used to identify friends and foes. The visor also provides map, navigation data, and link-up with the AIs that run the city. The players are also no cybernetic super-soldiers this time; player stamina and health are bigger factors than before, and both the speed and jump height are scaled back. The game features a Firefight mode, a four-player cooperative game mode that is centered around the campaign. Rather than the hardcore sci-fi of previous editions, ODST has influences of film noir and jazz-like elements to complement the soundtrack. Halo 3: ODST also includes Halo 3: Mythic, which is essentially a stripped-down, multiplayer-only version of Halo 3, and includes all Halo 3 downloadable maps, including Heroic, Legendary, and Mythic map packs and three previously unreleased maps.

InkBall

InkBall

Windows - Released - August 1, 2004

InkBall is a computer game that is included with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 and Windows Vista except the Starter and Home Basic editions. It employs the use of a stylus or mouse to draw lines to direct balls into holes of corresponding colors. Points are awarded for putting colored balls in the correct hole, time left at the end of the round, and for breaking blocks. The game is over when time runs out, or when a ball enters a hole of the wrong color. However, gray is a neutral color and therefore if a gray ball goes into the hole of a different color or if any ball goes into a gray hole nothing will happen. Some blocks have special properties, such as breaking when hit, opening and closing at intervals, changing the ball's color or making the ball accelerate. InkBall has a variety of difficulty levels, ranging from Beginner, to Novice, to Intermediate, to Advanced and finally to Expert. As the difficulty increases, the time to move the balls into their correct hole(s) is dramatically lowered, and the overall complexity of the task increases substantially.

Kinectimals

Kinectimals

Microsoft Xbox 360 - November 4, 2010

Kinectimals is one of the launch titles for Microsoft's hands-free controller, the Kinect sensor. The game falls in line a bit with Nintendo's Nintendogs titles about playing with and taking care of virtual pets. Except here, petting the animal has moved from swiping a stylus across a small screen to physically petting the animal with your hands using the Kinect camera. The game features thirty different cubs that can be raised, trained, and played with. It also features light story elements focused on pirate treasure with various mysteries to solve on and about the island, Lemuria, on which the game takes place. A small flying character known as Bumble introduces the player to the game and various other elements, such as guidance on the story part of the game. Initially five cubs are available (Cheetah, Royal Bengal Tiger, Black Panther, African Lion and African Leopard), but later on six additional ones can be unlocked (Bornean Clouded Leopard, Serval, White Jaguar, Bobcat, Siberian Tiger and Saber-tooth Tiger). Additional ones can be added to the game through downloadable content and toy animals that come with scan codes that can be held up to the camera to redeem them. These are tied through game shops and a deal with Burger King for instance. Besides simply raising and petting a virtual cat, the player can also take part in mini-games with pets, as well as teaching them tricks. Mini-games involve some abstract ideas for a virtual pet, such as jumping rope and driving the pet around on a remote control car. Aside from the story elements, the game is very open-ended allowing players to experience the game, generally, however they want.

Maxwell's Maniac

Windows 3.X - 1992

According to the second law of thermodynamics, the fate of the universe is to unwind (over a great period of time) like an old spring-loaded clock as high energy flows only toward low, and as order irreversibly gives way to disorder in a process called entropy. Back in the 1870s, the British scientist Hames Clerk Maxwell caused an uproar when he unleashed "Maxwell's Demon." Maxwell's Demon was a theoretical being capable of opening and closing a gate between two chambers of unbalanced molecules. Through such precision control of molecules, Maxwell's Demon would be able to reverse entropy and, among other things, create wonderful perpetual motion machines. But could such a demon work? For nearly a century, scientists argued about whether Maxwell's Demon could really defeat entropy. Finally, Maxwell's Demon was undone by the argument of French physicist, Leon Brillouin, in the 1950s. The argument? Simply that Maxwell's Demon would have to work too hard. Maxwell's Demon was put to rest. But wait! He's back! Only he's not a demon anymore. Now he's a maniac! And he's trying harder than ever to keep those molecules flowing in the right direction. Won't you please help?

MechCommander 2

MechCommander 2

Windows - Released - July 17, 2001

On the world of Carver V, the FedCom civil war between House Davion and House Steiner threatens to pull plenty of innocent bystanders into the maelstorm... It also offers plenty of opportunities for a veteran mercenary commander... Such as yourself. MechCommander 2 is a game of real-time tactical mech combat, and a sequel to the original MechCommander. Take on missions from your employer(s). Once you have selected a mission, you need to outfit your mechs. You can purchase new mechs if you have enough C-Bills, but most of your acquisition will come from salvage of downed mechs. You can then refit the mechs by changing its loadout to customize for the pilot. After you have chosen your mechs and properly outfitted them, it's time to assign your pilots. Each pilot can have zero or more specialties, depending on experience level, and those skills can siginificantly increase his or her effectiveness. It takes good planning to match the right mech to the right pilot. On the full 3D battle field, you will control movement, targetting, and engagement tactics of your mechs. Call in support elements such as artillery and airstrikes, scout choppers and sensor probes, even a salvage team to salvage downed mechs. Capture resource buildings or resource trucks for more "support pts". Capture turret stations to turn the owner's weapons against them, or blow up the generators, or the control station, or the turrets. It's all up to you. Take over the sensor control station to obtain sensor data. Capture military installations to get better weapons. The action is in real-time (pausable), and the full 3D view is rotatable in all directions (up/down/full 360 pan) and zoomable. Terrain is full 3D with plenty of trees and other objects, from infantry and battlearmor to trucks and other transport vehicles. Plenty of things to blow up on the ground, from fuel tanks (which causes BIG explosions) to ammo dumps (more big explosions), to plenty of civilian buildings. After you fulfill your mission objectives (primary and secondary available), the pilots get medals and campaign ribbons if applicable based on performance, and gain experience. If they gain sufficient experience they may gain a level and win a special expertise (such as LRM, Laser, etc.) You can also salvage downed mechs (including any you lost) and perhaps sell them for further profit. Multiplayer is quite robust with internet play and plenty of options and different game modes.

MechWarrior 4: Black Knight

MechWarrior 4: Black Knight

Windows - DLC - October 31, 2001

Kentares IV has been in political turmoil since Ian Dresari took possession of the Ducal throne. Details of his succession are sketchy, but many feel that his sister Johanna was the heir apparent. Since her untimely death, civil unrest has grown into open rebellion. Karl Sonntag, a staunch loyalist to the Dresari family, turned his back on the fledgling sovereign and was recently arrested for sedition when he publicly condemned the new regime. His fate - as well as those of other political prisoners - is uncertain, but we do know that his leadership could prove invaluable if a resistance is to be mounted against Ian Dresari. After years of faithful service as a Davion lance commander, you found yourself facing a disciplinary review board following a heated dispute with a superior officer. Using his influence with the corporative magistrate, he seized an opportunity to trump up charges of insubordination against you and had you drummed out. Disgraced, jobless, and without a C-bill to your name, you turned to the only source of income at hand: Colonel Michael Lawhorn and his Black Knight Legion. The Legion is a tight-knit group of rogue mercenaries with a reputation for the ruthless pursuit of profit - a reputation that's not altogether undeserved. Your experience and can-do attitude has helped you rise quickly through the ranks, becoming the colonel's confidant and second in command. Your first contract as a member of the Legion is with a Steiner backed mineral corporation. It was supposed to be a simple job - put a stop to a series of pirate raids on a remote mining colony. Of course, when you're a mercenary, these things never end up being simple…

MechWarrior 4: Vengeance

MechWarrior 4: Vengeance

Windows - November 23, 2000

The game takes place on the Inner Sphere planet Kentares IV and its moon. Players take control of Ian Dresari, son of famed Clan War hero Duke Eric Dresari and heir to the throne of Kentares. A civil war erupts on the planet after William Dresari, Ian's cousin, betrays the family and seizes the throne for himself under the banner of Katherine "Katrina" Steiner, ruler of the Lyran Alliance and responsible for annihilation of loyalists to Victor Steiner-Davion, brother of Katrina. After a surprise attack by Steiner forces on the Dresari royal palace, leaving Eric Dresari and the majority of the royal family dead, Ian meets up with his uncle, Sir Peter Dresari, on the moon orbiting Kentares' to launch a guerrilla campaign against Steiner. Ian fights alongside with fellow Resistance MechWarriors, Casey Nolan, Jen McQuarrie, and Jules Gonzales, and their commander Elise Rathburn in various missions. The Resistance eventually relocates its base on the moon and sets up camp for the first time on Kentares' in the arctic regions. At one point during the campaign, Ian's uncle Peter is murdered by Duncan Burke, a high-ranking officer in Katrina's forces. Ian and the rest of the Resistance are devastated by the loss of his uncle and debate over whether or not to continue the fight for Kentares' freedom. They decide to push forward and manage to capture a satellite network from Steiner. The rebel group moves into the mountains. After destroying a disabled but heavily-guarded Steiner dropship, Ian and the Resistance move to the Hadra Peninsula, a remote desert region. Rumors of an abandoned prison camp reach the Resistance and efforts are made to locate and liberate it in order to enlist more personnel for the Resistance. Along the way, Ian is shocked to find that one member of his family survived Steiner's siege of the Dresari palace: his sister Joanna. After a short reunion, Ian and Joanna are separated once more as the Resistance plans to mobilize their forces to assault Steiner's stronghold. They make a brief detour to save the coastal town of Vale after Steiner threatens to bomb the town due to allegations of links to the Resistance. Not only does the Resistance save the population, but Ian manages to personally defeat his uncle's murderer, Duncan Burke, in a heated duel. Pushing forward into the cities, the fighting heats up and Resistance casualties mount. Joanna informs Ian of an old armory cache hidden somewhere in the city full of equipment enough to outfit four heavy Lances of mechs, valuable for assaulting the Dresari palace, now the headquarters for the Steiner occupation. Before the search for the cache could be conducted however, Joanna and her Lance are ambushed by Steiner forces, leaving her badly injured and in mortal danger. Ian has to make a choice, between rescuing his sister from certain death or securing the weapons cache for an assault on the Dresari palace. Whatever the player chooses, Ian and the Resistance fight one last battle against House Steiner, finally putting an end to the war. However, the fight is not yet over for Ian, as William shows up in a modified Daishi, challenging Ian to a duel. Ian defeats William and finally frees the planet from Steiner's grasp. Depending on the choice the player makes during the penultimate mission, either Joanna or Ian will ascend the throne as Duchess or Duke, respectively.

Microsoft Decathlon

Microsoft Decathlon

MS-DOS - Released - 1982

A simulation of the 10-event Olympic Decathlon, this early game was basically a series of 10 arcade games back to back. The player used the keyboard to control how fast the character would go in a race or when to throw the javelin, for example. Decathlon also had a training mode which let you play any of the events individually. A nice feature about the game is that up to six players could play the game in hot seat mode. Several of the events were one player at a time, but many of the races were two at a time, giving you some live competition. You were scored based on your performance at each event and the player with the highest total at the end was awarded the gold medal. The ultimate challenge was to try to beat Bruce Jenner, winner of the Decathlon in the 1976 games.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Apple Mac OS - Released - 1986

Flight Simulator for the Apple Macintosh became the third port of FS to a Motorola 68000 platform, following the Amiga and Atari ST. However, Microsoft, rather than subLOGIC, published the Mac version. While the first Mac release was dubbed "Version 1.0", it was in fact released four years after Version 1.0 for the PC, and thus was much different in nature. The graphics engine was much closer to Flight Simulator II for the Amiga and Atari ST. Naturally, the Mac edition was monochrome only, but at a higher resolution. The mouse was used for the throttle, yoke, and brakes, while the keyboard controlled the rest. Like FS II and MSFS 3.0, FS1 for the Mac featured pull-down menus and multiple view windows for the cockpit, spot plane, map, and control tower. MSFS for Mac could run on any classic Mac down to the 128k, although at that level, the "war game", sound, and situation library were disabled. With 512k RAM, in-game help was available for each instrument and menu function.

Namco History Vol. 3

Namco History Vol. 3

Windows - Released - 1998

Namco History Vol. 3 (ナムコヒストリー Vol. 3), is a Japanese Windows 95 game. It has Pac-Man and Dig Dug games. The collection includes these games: Pac-Man-1980 You control all-time famous Pac-Man, a little circle with a mouth like a seven pieces in a eight-sliced pizza, but he's all yellow. The goal is that he must eat all the power pellets and normal pellets, but this is not very easy, since four ghosts, which are Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, are hunting down Pac-Man. Unfortunately, Pac-Man does not have a weapon with him at all times, so to slow down ghosts, he uses tunnels and power pellets, which the latter is collected and makes all the ghosts blue, which gives Pac the chance to eat them before they turn different colors. In the middle of stages, if Pac-Man eats a number or so of pellets, there is going to be a fruit target, which can disappear if Pac-Man spends time on something else. Ms. Pac-Man-1982 This is the sequel to Pac-Man, instead, you control Ms. Pac-Man, the wife of Pac-Man, is taken the same role as Pac-Man and has the same formula, only the maze layout is changed. Super Pac-Man-1982 Look up in the sky. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Super Pac-Man! This is the same to the other Pac-Man games, only replacing with stuff like apples, bananas, and more, but the power pellets stay the same. To get these, Pac-Man must equip a Mega Power Pellet, which instead of making ghosts blue, makes Pac-Man big enough to destroy locked doors that blocks the fruits. For the ghosts, it just squishes them. After intermissions, there will be bonus rounds, which Pac-Man is big at all times, and has to eat all the stuff before times runs out. If Pac-Man does this without all the time has been ran out, he will get a bonus. To unlock doors if not Super Pac-Man, he can use keys and it'll open a door\hatch. Pac & Pal-1983 This is very similar to Super Pac-Man, only that Pac can't be big that is used to unlock doors, and the keys are replaced by cards. There is no pellets, so Pac-Man uses Rally-X smoke screen, Galaxian beams, Snowmen, trumpets, and more. Instead of doing his job all himself, he has a friend named Miru that she will help Pac in his adventure, but getting stuff to the ghost pen, due to Pac-Man moving in random directions. Anyway, touching her won't kill Pac or using stuff on her won't affect her at all. Dig Dug-1982 Instead of Pac-Man, Dig Dug takes his role, except he is now underground and fighting with two monsters, named Pookas and Fygars. If he drops two rocks, there will be a fruit target, just like Pac-Man. Dig Dug now has a weapon with a harpoon and a pump, using those to defeat monsters. He can use rocks, aswell, but are limited rocks in each level. The player will make a mistake when Dig Dug gets himself crushed by a rock, which is used to crush enemies, or when a monster touches him, or getting burned by a Fygar flame. Dig Dug II-1985 This has the same formula as Dig Dug, only with a roam around without digs and he and the monsters is in islands, with a drill to make islands fall into the ocean, which replaces digging and rocks, which the rocks and falling islands is no match for Dig Dug.

Microsoft Xbox - Released - December 26, 2001

NightCaster is a third-person, single-player, action-adventure game for the Xbox, developed by VR1 Entertainment and published by Microsoft. Players take the role of Arran, a novice wizard whose magical power grows as he ages throughout his quest to collect spells and rid the world of eternal night. The start of the story mode introduces the player to Arran, a young boy living in a small village. One day, Arran creeps into a forest whilst playing hide and seek with his friends, and stumbles upon a glowing floating orb. The orb informs him that he must go on a quest to defeat the evil 'Night Caster'. Arran is then placed in suspended animation (even though he still ages) by the orb, presumably so that he 'will be ready' to fight the Nightcaster. Arran wakes up, having aged to around the mid-twenties, to find his world devastated by darkness and the legions of monsters under the reign of the Nightcaster spreading terror over the populace. Arran's parents are supposedly dead when Arran finds his home to be a smoldering wreckage, at which point the orb informs him that 'it is the Nightcaster['s doing]'. So he starts his quest facing many creatures and as he ages his spells are stronger, more effective and more expansive.

Olympic Decathlon

Olympic Decathlon

Tandy TRS-80 - Released - 1980
