African Raiders-01

African Raiders-01

Atari ST - Released - 1989

The game tries to represent the African part of 11th Paris-Dakar rally route, which in the game takes place in Tunisia, Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal in 1988-1989. Controlling his(her) car in third-person 'behind the car' view, player should drive through the marked path in Sahara. When player loses his(her) way, he(she) may be in the sands alone and start to skid. In this situation he(she) may switch between 4x4 and 4x2 modes of the car. These modes have own opportunities and misses. The speed is limited to 87 in 4x4 mode and limited by car's parameters in 4x2 mode. But in 4x4 mode path marks may stop the car, while in 4x2 mode the car may knock the path parks off. Switching the gear, player may drive back and forth to avoid blocking of car either by path mark or by debris in the sand. Direction of the way is shown by compass as well as length of traversed path and volume of residuary fuel are displayed by indicators. Other drivers are present on the way during day and night, therefore they should be left behind to win in the rally. There are five stages with different visible horizons: 1) Tunis - In Salah (5726 Km); 2) Ouallene - Achegour (4353 Km); 3) Achegour - Niamey (4587 Km); 4) Ouagadougou - Bamako (4438 Km); 5) Bamako - Dakar (3622 Km). So, you have to conquer the sands of Sahara, show good time on each stage, and to be the first at the finish.

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1988

Your life was quiet, with your job as a messenger, in your small town. But that tranquility ended for you the day that Rockers panda arrived on the town with their bikes and they did nothing but bother you, maybe because they did not like your appearance, or, who knows, maybe what they disliked was that you rode better than them on a motorcycle. You could not do anything, until you remembered that saying: "If you can not defeat your enemy, join him." And so you sent your request to the head of the group. The answer was affirmative, but yes, you had to go through a tough test that had already passed some of them, as lame Johnny, who lost his leg in the test. You should go through a circuit prepared by them without hitting Larry «Kamikaze». If you manage to complete it, your problems will end. Luck!!! Objective: Playing with this typical arcade is very simple. You must eliminate all the luminous points of the screen, passing over them with your blue colored motorcycle, trying not to hit the motorcycle that circulates in the opposite direction and that is violet. For this you can change the track and use the accelerator. If you manage to complete the circuit you will receive a bonus on your marker and you can easily get extra life if you manage to collide with the violet bike in a time limit. Of course, here you can not use the accelerator. The game has 20 levels, with fewer doors as you progress level.

Battle Chopper

Battle Chopper

Microsoft MSX - 1985

Another part shows your damage status and score, and finally the third part is where you play and control the game. This part is a radar and it shows the tanks coming down the screen and you control two bars up, down, left or right, and where the bars meet is where your weapon will hit. The tanks will fire missiles upwards at you and you can be hit three times before it is game and this is shown by your helicopter changing colour in your damage status. You have two weapons and they are cannon and missile and you can switch between either.

Commodore 64 - Released - 1988

Impact is an old break-out style game. The user controls a paddle and needs to catch a ball with the paddle each time it comes down. When the ball hits a brick, it is destroyed (unless it's made undestroyable). Sometimes, a bonus will come out of the brick. This adds to the 'bonus score'. When the player collected one or more bonuses, he may 'release' them, and he receives a powerup. Each 'bonus score' has a different powerup: the most powerful powerups need the largest number of bonus points. Impact comes with a lot of levels and a level editor.

Crete 1941

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1991

Crete 1941 is a wargame recreating operation Merkur, at that time the biggest airborne invasion, conducted by German paratroops (Fallschirmjäger) during the World War II. The player may also control Allied forces (Greek, British, Australian and New Zealand troops). After the deployment phase the game lasts 28 turns: from the morning of 20th May to the night of 27th May 1941. There are options to make the game easier: wind drift affecting drop accuracy can be turned off, Allies may fail to intercept German supply convoys. The units consist of infantry, engineers, artillery, anti-tank and anti-aircraft guns (the latter effective against landing paratroops/gliders). They're characterized by morale, experience and cohesion (integrity, of special importance to paratroopers spread after the landing). Additionally, the German side has air support (recon, airstrikes), while the British field tanks. The (mostly hilly) terrain affects combat losses. The game takes into account (score) the historical evacuation of Allied forces.

Kick Off 2

Kick Off 2

Commodore 64 - Released - 1990

The original Kick Off was expanded on in many ways for this sequel. The game now features full tournament modes (although the players on the teams are fictitious) and four different pitches (including an implementation of plastic pitches, whose uneven bounce cause controversy when several British clubs tried them in the 1980s). Viewed top-down, the controls involve trapping the ball under your foot, giving you time to prepare passes. Running with the ball is tricky at first, as it doesn't stick to your foot the way it did in contemporary football games. Complex moves such as overhead kicks, back-heels and long-range through-ball passes can be completed with practice.

Laser Squad

Laser Squad

Microsoft MSX2

The original MSX English tape-version of Laser Squad was lost for decades until recently restored, thanks to MSX user Montagut and the SofaCas tool. Laser Squad is a turn-based tactics video game, originally released for the ZX Spectrum and later for the MSX computers and other machines. The legacy of the game can be seen in other titles like the X-COM series, especially the acclaimed UFO: Enemy Unknown which was also created by Julian Gollop and was initially conceived as a sequel to Laser Squad. It also features the following enhancements or patches: Two extra levels from Spectrum's "Laser Squad Expansion Kit Two" have been ported and added. New title screens (MSX2 and MSX1 remakes by FRS, and also Amiga and Spectrum original titles). Ability to select display frequency and two new palettes (MSX2 only). Removed "port FE" bug causing crashes on various MSX machines. Fixed display bugs in status bars and "PRESS FIRE TO END SELECTION" message. Use cursor keys instead of Q,A,O,P keys to move cursor and units. MSX-viewable manual and quick manual. Fixed a bug allowing units to walk through obstacles when loading another scenario after scenario "The Stardrive" (this is also happening on Spectrum version).

Microsoft MSX - Released - 1988

'The most famous club in the world' has had its problems in the League recently, but maybe you think you could do a better job, so here's your chance. As well as making managerial decisions you can even play for the entire team! But before you get your boots on, there's a bit of managing to do via the icon-driven menu system. Of course, no amount of training will be enough for some old snoggers so they can be sold and new players bought via the transfer system. Matches are viewed from side-on view. Both United and the opposition can be player or computer-controlled. Players dribble automatically and shoot when the fire button is released - the strength of kick determined by the time fire was held down. In addition you can chip the ball by pressing fire again quickly afterwards. Tackling is achieved either by running into the ball or by doing a sliding tackle. If mistimed the latter can lead to a free kick. In terms of presentation you have easy-to-use menus with a fair amount of disk accessing. Graphics are okay apart from pastel colour scheme and 'skating' players. Sound represents appallingly annoying tune with a reasonable match FX. Gameplay is not that great since it is frustratingly difficult to score goals. Man Utd fans will enjoy the almost forgotten experience of winning the league. Like the team, strictly second division.

Metalyx

Metalyx

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1987

It is the year 2389 and three years of war with an alien race has just come to an end. During the war, Earth's 'Metalyx' type power satellites were shut down and protected by a robotic defence system. However, this defence system has been damaged by continuous alien attacks on the satellites and it can no longer tell the difference between friend or foe. Your task is to take your repair craft to each of these satellites and re-attach the floating power pod to it's position on the satellite. The power pod is recognisable by the fact that it is the only spinning object. Before you can obtain a power pod, you must clear some of the battle debris still floating around the satellite, but you must be careful not to shoot the power pod. To position the pod, your ship will attract the pod when it is nearby, but on higher levels it will be repelled by your ship and with careful manoeuvring, it can be placed in position (P). Once this is done, you must return to the access hatch to be teleported to the next satellite. Once 9 satellites have been repaired, then you will dock with the mothership, and go on to the next 9 satellites.

Subbeteo is a group of table top games simulating team sports such as association football, cricket, both codes of rugby and hockey. The name is most closely associated with the football game, which for many years was marketed as "the replica of Association Football" or Table Soccer. This game is dedicated to that hobby and represents it in digital form.

Submariner

Submariner

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Released - 1988

Submariner is one of ZX Spectrum's "3-D" games, in that it is played and viewed from an isometric overhead angle. Players essentially take role of a scuba diver in an undersea story to search for the "evil Nigel Lobb." So no, the game isn't about the classic Marvel Comics character. No real detail is initially given for why players are out to get Nigel Lobb, aside from saving mermaids from him. However, he is noted to be in control of various deep-sea lifeforms, including but not limited to jellyfish, giant crabs, "poisonous" air bubbles, including said mermaids. Gameplay takes place over the course of 160 rooms, and the manner to which players must venture through them or solve the mysteries may vary. Players are encouraged to use careful planning, timing and practice in order to succeed in their quest. The game boasts "no simple solution" to getting through it's challenges, and it is playable with either joystick or keyboard.

The Vikings

The Vikings

Amstrad CPC - Released - 1986

Your Warrior Queen has been taken, so you, Erik the Viking, have been tasked to rescue her from Death Island as well as stealing all the treasure from the Main Fortress. You start your quest on Stoney Island to get the equipment you need for your treasure hunting on Death Island and to get off Stoney Island. Off course the locals don't appreciate you coming to their home and stealing from them so they will chase you and throw spears at you. You need to search the island and find a sword and shield but the sword is hidden in one of the many huts so they need burning down to find it. A torch is required but that is too high on a building so a ladder will need finding to get the torch. Once you have the sword you can throw an infinite amount at the locals and the shield will slow down your energy bar from decreasing when you are hit. If your energy does reach zero then it is a loss of one of your five lives. On your voyage to the island you damaged the mast to your ship so you need to find the three parts to it by burning the huts and searching the rest of the island. Once found you can now sail to Death Island. Don't sail too far from the island though as you will sail over the edge of the world and it's game over. Once you have reached Death Island you must destroy a protective wall before heading north to the fortress and plundering it's wares. Be careful as the locals here are faster and throw more spears. The Vikings is a Run 'n Gun game where you view your Viking from behind at an elevated angle. A small part of the island is shown on screen and the screen scrolls in all directions when you move. Sailing the ship is viewed from above. A joystick is used to control Erik and the ship.
