Archon: The Light and the Dark

Archon: The Light and the Dark

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1988

Archon is a strategic board game with some similarities to chess. Two sides, a light one and a dark one, consisting of 18 pieces each compete on a board divided into (9 by 9) squares. You win the game by having one of your units on each of the five powerpoint squares, by removing all opposing pieces from the board or by imprisoning the last remaining creature of the opposing side. However, you can't just remove a piece from the board by landing on it. When two pieces clash, the outcome is decided in the battle arena during one-on-one real-time combat. If the real-time combat takes place on a dark square, the dark monster gets a health bonus (longer life bar). On a light square the light side gains an advantage. There are also some squares whose color changes over time (from afternoon, to dusk, to night, to dawn etc.), which adds an extra layer of strategy to the game. Unlike chess the two sides are not identical. Both sides consist of mythological creatures. For example the light side has among others unicorns, valkyries and a djinni while the dark side features basilisks, banshees and manticores. The differences are not just cosmetic. Two special pieces are the light wizard & the dark sorceress, they can both cast magical spells like: imprison a unit on the board, shift the flow of time (change day/night cycle to your advantage), bring one unit back from the dead etc. The different pieces have their own movement restrictions regarding the number of squares they're allowed to travel on the board and whether or not they can jump over other units (like the knight in chess). Units also behave different in combat; some units are faster than others, some use melee attacks while others fire projectiles. Archon can be played with either one or two players. The NES version, which was released a few years after the other versions, has improved graphics for the real-time combat part. Each type of square has it's own colored background and the unit sprites are larger.

Argo

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1988

Loosely based on the Greek myth of the Argonauts, Argo focuses on its central protagonist Iason (Jason), narrating a simple story that does not quite correspond to the known myth: Iason's father has been poisoned, and his native city Iolkos overrun by monsters known as Pontos. Iason must single-handedly eliminate them and save his homeland. Argo is a role-playing game set in a pseudo-3D continuous world. The player explores the environments from a first-person view. It is possible to try to talk to any encountered character, as well as attack anyone. Most battles take place within the exploration area and involve a fairly simple turn-based exchange of attacks. However, occasional fights against larger monsters take place on a separate screen, have an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, and require the player to move and attack in real time. Experience points and gold are awarded for defeating enemies. It is necessary to feed the protagonist; when his condition is "hungry" food also restores a portion of his hit points.

Arion

Arion

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1986

Game follows the story of anime with the same title. In Thrace, Arion is taken from his mother Demeter by the god Hades. In the Underworld, Arion is trained to be a warrior. His training is driven by revenge: Arion was told that his mother's blindness was caused by Zeus and Zeus' death will remove the curse. Finally, Arion and Geedo (a huge ape-like creature who had become Arion's friend and companion) left the Underworld to find Zeus. Seneca, a small thief, makes off with Arion's sword and this leads Arion to his first encounter with the forces of Zeus, commanded by his daughter Athena. Arion is captured but is later set free by Lesfeena, Athena's mute serving girl. As Arion rejoins Geedo and Seneca (and worries about Lesfeena), the forces of Zeus and Poseidon face each other in battle. In the background sits the scheming Hades, and the calm Apollon who seems to have plans of his own.

Asteka II: Taiyou no Shinden

Asteka II: Taiyou no Shinden

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1986

Despite its name (a misspelling of Azteca), the story of Asteka II: Taiyou no Shinden is dedicated to the Maya people, indigenous inhabitants of Southern Mexico and Central America, rather than the Aztecs. The player controls a nameless adventurer who searches for the Sun Key, a mysterious ancient artifact which can unlock the secrets of the Mayan civilization. Asteka II: Taiyou no Shinden is an adventure game which takes place in the ruins of the ancient city Chichen Itza on the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. There is a top-down overworld on which the player can physically navigate the protagonist, entering temples and other locations. In such locations, the view switches to first-person perspective. The player interacts with the environment by selecting various verb commands ("Look", "Take", "Use", etc.), represented by icons, from a menu, and combining them with objects on the screen. In spite of its Japanese origins, the game features inventory item usage and puzzle-solving, which are more typical of Western-style adventures.

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1983

Attack on Pearl Harbor, part of the Epoch’s World War Game series, is an early war simulation game. You play as the Japanese in the historic attack on Pearl Harbor that happened in World War 2. The game is entirely in Japanese so it is difficult to understand if you’re an English-only speaker for sure. During gameplay you can basically dispatch attacks and choose the ships you’ll attack. You can also view the HP and defense of the various units. Upon attacking you’ll find out how many men you lost and how much damage you did to whatever unit you attacked. Lastly you can view a map and where the ships are positioned at the time. Hard to say much else as I lack the ability to play this game deeply without a knowledge of Japanese but that’s the basics of it.

Biotek

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1983

In this game you are in a bacteria factory for whatever reason. You walk around and spray the various smiley faces (which are bacteria) with a special yeast. This will turn them white happy cloud-looking bacteria. Be careful not to spray the happy cloud bacteria as they’ll become the evil bacteria that can kill you! Once they are in this form you can pick them up and drop them into the bottle on the right side of the screen. Over time the bacteria will change to angry bacteria which will duplicate themselves or become evil pirate looking bacteria that will kill you if you touch them. They also can convert other bacteria into deadly bacteria if they run into them. As the game progresses more and more bacteria are added into the levels. It’s a pretty simple game though and not too difficult until the later levels. Side note: the directions on the title screen use a word that is now very taboo in Japanese to describe the “crazy bacteria”, which is “kichigai”. Not sure if it was as offensive at the time of release but odd to see a cutesy game like this have something like that.

Bishoujo Shashinkan: Moving School

Bishoujo Shashinkan: Moving School

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1987

In Bishoujo shashinkan (Pretty girls photo exhibition or something like that), your task is to photograph pretty girls in various situations. You are given a choice of point-and-shoot, single lens reflex and a pro camera. In order to get a real photograph, you must evaluate the lighting situation and subject and choose the correct shutter speed, film speed, aperture and whether to use flash or not. The choice of camera is also a choice of difficulty level. With a point-and-shoot, you need only get one variable right, whereas the pro camera requires you to set both aperture, shutter and film speed correctly. You are only given a few chances per shoot to get the right exposure, or you will just see a miscoloured picture flash briefly. Judging the exposure correctly grants you a picture of the girl, often in a surprising state of undressing, whereafter you progress to even more erotic poses. Later stages raise the difficulty level, forcing you to use the SLR, and later the meter-less pro camera.

King Ogreth's units will constantly attack you on the way. The results of the battles are calculated automatically, according to the strength of your units. Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1985

In the year 2300, mankind has finally united, creating a federation government on the Earth and dedicating efforts and resources to space travel. Humans have spread to distant planets, only to face the gravest danger of all: a mysterious alien race that utilizes the newest robotic technology to destroy humanity. The special team Rayieza was stationed on Mars; after an alien assault, only one member, Blue, has survived. The protagonist's orders are to team up with Blue and safely return to Earth, which sounds much easier than it is in reality... One of Enix's early RPGs, Chikyū Senshi Rayieza has several distinguishing features. Unlike most RPGs, where the heroes explore the world on foot, in this game the player is mostly confined to the space ship; movement between planets is performed by selecting the appropriate menu command. Each flight between planets takes time (depending on the distance); enemies would pop out randomly and attack the crew. The player usually controls only the protagonist and Blue; both can use beam attacks or the much more powerful, but limited missiles. As in other RPGs, characters gain items and become stronger after defeating enemies.

Courageous Perseus

Courageous Perseus

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1984

An island has been over-run by a gorgon and her minions. The three goddesses there have been captured, the twelve signs of the zodiac dispersed, and the creatures enslaved. Perseus has been summoned by Zeus to right this wrong, and has been given a magic sword and shield with which to do it... Courageous Perseus is an action RPG, where the aim is to fight monsters and find either the 12 zodiac symbols or the three missing goddesses. Perseus starts the game on a raft off the coast of the island, which is crawling with monsters which randomly move about. These can be fought by running into them while holding down the fight button. Due to inexperience, only the light blue soldiers may be killed at the start of the game. But each won battle improves Perseus's offensive and defensive statistics, allowing Centaurs, Cockatrices, a Dragon and the gorgon herself to be eventually overcome. Winning a battle also restores a small amount of Perseus's energy. Energy is decreased though by being hit by enemies and also slowly decreases with time. Perseus starts with 1000 energy, which can be supplemented by finding energy sources scattered around the island. Once the energy reaches zero, the game is over. The game can also be lost if Perseus's raft is capsized by one of the giant crabs that infest the surrounding seas. Winning the game will require killing most of the creatures on the island, since monsters re-spawn very slowly

Dragon Buster

Dragon Buster

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1987

Originating in the arcades, Dragon Buster is an action platform game composed out of several large levels, each one containing various stages: a cave, a tower, a castle, etc. The player's goal in every level is to reach the final stage where the protagonist faces the level boss. There are often several ways to reach the final stages, and not all stages are necessary to visit. Equipped with a sword, the player character moves through platform stages, clearing them of diverse monsters, collecting power-ups and trying to stay in good health until the level boss, since it is impossible to heal between the stages. The hero's life meter (called "vitality" in the game) is the first introduction of such a feature to action games.

Dragon Slayer

Dragon Slayer

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1984

Dragon Slayer is commonly considered one of the progenitors of the action RPG genre. The premise is similar to Roguelikes: the player takes control of a knight who must fight his way through large overhead maze-like dungeons. Unlike roguelikes, the combat in the game is fully action-oriented: the player must approach the monster and "bump" into it in order to inflict damage, at the same time trying to avoid its blows. Combat takes place on the same screen as the exploration; monsters will also sometimes pursue the knight if he attempts to escape. Also contrary to roguelikes, none of the locations or items in the game is randomized. The player can collect power stones and coins during the journey; the power stones increase the hero's strength, while the coins increase his hit points (health). Defeating enemies also yields experience points, which determine the amount of maximum HP the hero is able to receive. The knight is able to cast magic spells, though they are mostly used outside of combat, for example breaking walls, teleporting, or creating a map of the area.

Galaga

Galaga

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1985

Galaga is a vertical arcade shooter from Namco. You control a space fighter at the bottom of the screen, scrolling left and right in order to avoid oncoming bombs and kamikaze attacks from alien invaders--and to fire your own missiles to fight back! There are an infinite number of stages to progress through. Every third level is a "challenge stage" in which you have a free chance to shoot as many aliens as possible and rack up bonus points. Certain aliens have tractor beams they can use to capture one of your ships. If that wasn't your last "life," you can try to shoot that alien down and recapture your ship, giving you two ships at once and doubling your firepower. A summary screen appears when the game is over, giving you both your final score and you final "hit ratio"--the number of missiles fired, enemies destroyed, and the percentage of targets hit.

Girls Paradise

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1988

The protagonist of the game is an eighteen-year-old boy whose destiny is to defeat a legendary demon, thus ending the Age of Darkness. As the hero embarks on his journey, he realizes that he must have chosen a wrong destination, for he becomes stranded on a tropical island that seems to be populated entirely by women. No, the hero does not abandon his world-saving mission because of that; but in order to leave the island, he needs to perform various quests for its young and pretty female inhabitants, which more often than not involve demonstrating... err... somewhat intimate aspects of his heroic nature. Girls Paradise is an adventure game without real puzzles and with menu-based interface; however, it differs from most typical Japanese adventures by allowing (and requiring) the player to find and pick up certain items and then use them from the inventory to advance in the game. The story progression relies more on direct dialogue and usage of items than on "triggering" events by repeatedly selecting commands. It is possible to look and otherwise interact with objects by moving the arrow keys and highlighting the object on screen. The interaction is still quite limited, though; not every screen has interactive objects, and most of the time the hero is allowed to move between locations only when dictated by the story.

The verb menu is the same for all screens, comprising eleven commands. The player advances the story by exploring locations and trying out all the commands, combining some of them with objects. Holland Tsuma wa Denki Unagi no Yume wo Miruka?

Holland Tsuma wa Denki Unagi no Yume wo Miruka?

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1985

The title (translated as Do Dutchwives Dream of Electric Eel?, an obvious humorous allusion to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) refers to a product of Japanese sex doll industry commonly known as "dutchwives". One of such sex dolls has been stolen, and the Oranda Corporation hires a private investigator to retrieve it. The second entry in Koei's self-proclaimed "Strawberry Porno" series (following Danchi-zuma no Yūwaku) has certain similarities to its predecessor in interface and overall concept. However, it is a much more open-ended game with emphasis on gradual exploration and interaction, which gives it a definite role-playing flavor in addition to basic adventure-like gameplay. Like in the preceding game, the player character is generated by stopping rapidly revolving counters assigned to individual parameters. These parameters influence the chance of success in subsequent encounters with women, though much of it is calculated randomly. The player area is a fairly vast top-down urban environment consisting of numerous interconnected screens, which are mapped as the player explores them.

Hydlide

Hydlide

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1985

An evil demon named Varalys casts a curse upon the princess Ann, turning her into three fairies. You control Sir Jim and set out to find the fairies, and then slay Varalys. Only by vanquishing Varalys can the curse be lifted. Once the princess is restored the kingdom will be saved. Hydlide is an action game with strong role-playing elements. The player has to explore vast wilderness areas, descending into dungeons and eliminating enemies on the way. Combat system is similar to the one implemented in Ys series: attacking enemies requires the player to "bump" into them, at the same time preventing them from attacking the playable character from the sides and the back. The player can change between defensive and offensive stances by pressing a single button. Magic spells can also be used to dispose of the enemies. The player character grows stronger and gains better parameters as he advances in the game.

Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness

Hydlide II: Shine of Darkness

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1986

Hydlide II: Shine Of Darkness is an action RPG, and the second installment in the Hydlide series. In a different space a wonderful world existed, called Fairy Land, which was dominated by swords and magic after the times of domination by monsters and evil had ended. The people of Fairy Land were intoxicated with peace. At that time an incident occurred. A Consciousness filled with evil awoke and it created new monsters, brought the dead back to life, and wanted to dominate Fairy Land again. The monks were one of the first who noticed this and warned the people about it but they didn't listen and left the monks disappointed. The monks prayed to God and asked Him if there was a Savior. God, impressed by the monks prayers warped the space-time of Fairy Land with the human world and selected an innocent boy who lived there. The player controls the innocent boy, who must roam the lands of Fairy Land and free it from evil. The player has to create a character before beginning the quest, customizing his parameters - life, strength, and magic. As in the previous game, the player slays enemies by "bumping" into them or using magical spells. It is possible to change between attacking and defensive stances on the fly. The hero can become stronger and gain additional powers. In the villages there are shops where the protagonist can buy and sell weapons, armor, and items.

In The Psychic City

In The Psychic City

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1984

About ten thousand years ago, certain humans began to develop psychic powers, eventually evolving into a new race known as the Rapp people. For the most part, they succeeded to hide their identity, living among humans; but humans have always mistrusted their supernatural abilities and mercilessly killed them whenever they were spotted, such as for example during the medieval witch hunts. Finally, the Third World War in the 21st century saw the Rapp people as scapegoats. They were hunted down and forced to hide in the ruins of New York. The protagonist of the game initially participates in combat against Rapp people, but is later saved by them and taught psychic powers, effectively becoming a Rapp himself. From that moment on, the hero swears to free the Rapp people and restore peace. In The Psychic City is a Japanese-made RPG; gameplay-wise, it is more similar to Western games, though it contains some original ideas of its own. The player creates the main character by distributing skill points. The skills include Shield, Telepathy, Psychokinesis, and others. Some of them have to be used outside of combat in order to advance in the game. The game uses very simple graphics, with the main character represented as a square on a top-down map. The player navigates the map, sometimes using psychic powers to access new areas, and fighting enemies that occasionally pop up in turn-based fashion. The fights are viewed from a first-person perspective, and the enemies are mostly restricted to robotic and mechanical creatures.

Killer Station

Killer Station

Fujitsu FM-7 - Released - 1983

Killer Station is a Space Invaders-like game in which you control a missile platform and try to shoot down the “Killer Stations” while avoiding being hit by their missiles. You’ll find you’re constantly being blocked by shooting the enemies either due to the “Barrier Satellites” – they’ll drop down on top of your ship to block your missiles – or more annoyingly the floating blue orbs which are “Space Mines”. These will go away temporarily once shot but if a “Mine Carrier” appears and crosses the screen they will all reappear! You’ll know a “Mine Carrier” is moving across the screen as you’ll hear an alarm sound. When you move your missile platform you’ll notice your missiles move too even after being shot so take note of that. Also even if the enemy missiles miss you they will star fires on the ground that you cannot pass until they burn out which can easily get you trapped. This game is rather hard and it is very annoying to hit the “Killer Stations” especially after a few levels.
